Over the past year and so, virtual reality technology developments are speeding up at a rampant speed and Samsung has managed to stay at the forefront of this. Its smartphone-based Gear VR affordable headset has turned out to be one of the most preferred choices for VR tech enthusiasts ever since its arrival and has been giving giant rivals like HTC and Oculus a run for their money.
However, Samsung seems to be in no mood to get complacent and is constantly pushing boundaries to come up with more immersive rich VR solutions. It seems that Samsung has seriously taken up the task to bring high-definition and immersive-rich content to Virtual Reality platform.
Samsung Unveils New High-Resolution VR Display
At the recently conducted Display Week 2017 Conference, Samsung showed off a new high-resolution display for VR headset which packs near 3.5x more pixels over the one which is offered by the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift. This newly-showcased display put a total of a whopping 858 pixels-per-inch and provides a 2,024 x 2,200 resolution confined for a 3.5inch display.
Now, this is almost twice the display density of the Vive and Rift VR display (460 PPI) and nearly 3.5x times more number of pixels in overall comparison. Additionally, the new Samsung display offers a good 90Hz refresh rate and 100 nits of brightness.
Reddit user Krenzo has posted a picture of the event where Samsung had put two side-by-side displays, one is the currently used in Gear VR and the other is its newly-proposed VR display.
Below are the results of the two displays where you can clearly analyze the difference between the outputs of the two in terms of image clarity and resolution. You can notice the major reduction in the ‘screen-door-effect’ as well as the visibility of individual pixels with Samsung’s new VR display.
However, when it comes to the advancements in VR display tech, Samsung is not alone in this race. Tech giant Google is also said to be working on its own secret project which aims to pack 10 times more pixels than the existing VR displays in the market. Google is also said to have partnered with one of leading manufacturers of OLED, but the details of the project are still skim at the moment.
