Samsung held its annual Galaxy Unpacked event in early July, revealing new products, developing tech, and showcasing the future of Samsung’s mobile, AI, and immersive tech ventures. Of particular note to VR, AR, and XR fans was the teasing of a timeline to bring an Android XR headset to market.
A Leak Looks Ahead
President of Samsung’s mobile division, TM Roh, gave some admittedly scant information regarding the long gestating device, now codenamed “Moohan,” at the event. Although Roh may have simply pointed to a “new XR platform coming this year,” that information was confirmed by Rick Osterloh, VP of Platforms and Devices at Google. What does this mean for consumers? Patience, first of all.
A report published by Business Insider suggests that Samsung will launch the device to developers in late 2024, potentially at Samsung’s Developer Conference on October 3. The device will be the first to use a bespoke Android XR platform, although it has been reported that Google will be shopping the system around to other developers.
VR porn fans will be particularly interested in how a Samsung + Google co-creation will bring XR porn to a new audience in what is hoped to be an affordable, accessible format. XR porn is a rapidly developing field of adult entertainment that is in need of a couple of crucial devices to bring in a devoted audience.
