VR Set to Finally Merge Gaming and Porn

For decades there have been two major forces pushing technological advancement.  Porn and video games. These two worlds have been rapidly evolving side by side since their inception. But despite the obvious overlap between their respective demographics the two worlds have yet to really merge. Where are all the erotic video games? Where are all the interactive adult videos? When will the two worlds of gaming and porn finally collide? Many are beginning to say that the time has finally come and that it is virtual reality that will usher in the new era.

The rise of virtual reality in the past few years has induced a huge increase in the amount of interactive erotica. In the past, pornography and other erotic entertainment was primarily a passive experience, but now there are a variety of exciting options that allow for a much more engaging and personal experience. Virtual reality porn is only in its infancy and already we can see a tendency towards increasingly interactive content. 360 degree videos in an entirely first-person perspective offer a new dimension to adult entertainment that simply wasn’t possible before. The level of immersion is truly remarkable. Despite these incredible advancements, the adult industry has only scratched the surface of what’s possible with this new type of media and industry leaders are already looking towards video game developers to better understand how to improve the user’s experience and make their content even more interactive.

At the same time that the porn industry is looking towards video games for inspiration we see the gaming industry shifting as well. No longer are video games just a hobby for socially awkward children. Video games have been around long enough at this point that many middle-aged adults grew up with video games their entire lives. These adults see video games as a way of life and more and more they are becoming the entertainment of choice for people of all ages. As the gamer demographic shifts towards an adult audience so too does the gaming content itself and developers are finally opening to the idea of exploring erotic themes in their games.

There was a time when the majority of men got their porno from magazines. Nowadays such a concept seems almost archaic. In just a couple of decades magazine erotica has gone from being a multi-billion dollar industry and supporting the lifestyles of the rich and famous (anyone remember Hugh Heffner?) to now being little more than a novelty for nostalgic old men. Once you’ve experienced the mind-blowing immersion of a full 3d environment it’s difficult to go back. It’s only a matter of time before the majority of media will be experienced in some form of VR. It’s a genuinely world-changing technological leap that VR has made and like all of the major advancements of the past there’s no going back. Whether the vr of the future will take the form of full immersion virtual reality like we see with today’s VR headsets, or whether it will take the form of an augmented reality environment that overlaps with your real world environment (something like Google Glass) remains to be seen. What is certain is that virtual reality is here to stay and is only going to get bigger and better from here.

Comparing the leap from television to virtual reality is a lot like comparing the leap from radio to tv, or from black and white tv to color tv. There are a lot of similarities between the patterns of adoption that occur once a new technology is introduced to the market. Things like the rate that people adopt the new technology and the speed that new content is produced seem to follow certain predictable trends. That being said there are still some striking differences between this most recent transition from 2d to 3d that I think are worth exploring. One such difference is directly related to porn. Namely the transition from a voyeuristic porn experience to a first-person one.  Some would say that this is the most drastic transition in the history of entertainment. More drastic even than the transition from radio to television where both forms of media were at least still experienced in a passive, third-person way. Virtual reality porn allows us to finally be a part of the scene. Maybe it’s not our body in the image. Maybe it’s not our voice in the dialogue. But nevertheless our mind is there. And it is our mind that we identify most strongly with.

Now consider for a moment the impact that this might have on the type of pornography a person seeks out. The type of sex a person looks for if they can participate is  completely different from the type of sex than they look for if they can’t. If I know that I’m relegated to the position of silent observer, I might seek out a scene that plays into that role. A scene where there is room for me so to speak. An example of this can be found in the cuckold genre of porn. An entire category of adult entertainment dedicated to a purely passive and third-person form of porn consumption. Now imagine the opposite.  Imagine that I get the opportunity to actually be the character who is doing the fucking. It is my cock she’s sucking. What impact this has on the type of material that porn enthusiasts seek out is still uncertain but the gaming industry definitely offers more than a few hints.

Going all the way back to the beginning of video games the most common theme has always been the theme of saving the girl. Whether it’s Mario Bros or Zelda there always seems to be a damsel in distress and it’s always the job of the protagonist to save her.
