Here’s what you don’t want when watching porn: the guy from Meatza Pizza ringing the doorbell after your neighbor ordered a pepperoni-extra cheese; a notification of software updates; a download finishing and auto-opening just when Ziggy Star is unhooking her bra.
You don’t want any interruptions. You don’t want the fantasy broken, and that’s even more true in VR porn, which allows you to pretend a picnic with voluptuous Nathaly Cherie turns you into the main course. You don’t want lag. You don’t want the headset digging into your cranium. You don’t want the whole headset falling apart because it’s made of cardboard.
And Google sure as hell doesn’t want any of those things either—and that’s the key to Google Daydream, the two-month-old headset available online and in stores, compatible with several dedicated smartphones. With the arrival of Daydream, we see that Cardboard, was a stop-gap measure, only a hint at what Google had really envisioned for virtual reality, including VR porn.
Google Daydream is light years ahead of Cardboard, and is among the elite of VR headsets overall. But, as we’ll see, it has plenty of features making it perfect for virtual reality porn.
Daydream in Comfort
Let’s face it: whether it includes a happy ending or not, a daydream is not meant to include heavy equipment weighing on your noggin. One of the stumbling blocks for VR in general has been the size and slight discomfort of some of the headsets.
Google Daydream solves this problem for mobile VR porn viewers by giving us a soft, comfy machine. The unit is covered in cloth—novel but obvious, right? It’s thin, breathable fabric, available in snow, slate (gray), or crimson.
You get to skip the strap atop your head with Daydream, which goes with the single closure in back. The compartment for your phone closes in front with a simple clip.
Google reports that the Daydream is a third lighter than your average headset. And, hey, it’s designed to fit over your eye-glasses. So if you want your POV sex partner to respect your for your spectacles, life has just gotten much better!
Simple Controls: Key to VR Porn
In addition to giving you a comfortable feel amenable to porn viewing, Google has gone through some trouble to give you an uninterrupted experience in the area of controls. It uses a small, rectangular hand controller, as opposed to some controllers that cause you to reach up to the headset itself.
Sure, operating a controller of any kind threatens the illusion just a bit, but you can pretend you’re having regular sex and you need to change your flatscreen over to the Knicks game.
Seriously, the controller helps keep the blood flowing through your…daydream via a simple design. Its main face has just two buttons—“menu” and “select,” with volume controls on the side. One cool feature is that the controller allows for you to rotate the view—that is, you don’t actually swivel your head.
The Google Daydream isn’t all about moving during use, a feature one might want for games, but one that doesn’t help your porn experience much. It’s about sitting and utilizing the Bluetooth remote rather than actual space around you, which the Daydream doesn’t track.
Porn-Quality VR Experience
The porn experience demands quality, right? Well, if you’re a stickler for a high-end and glitch-free (or mostly free) VR experience, Google might be a few steps ahead of you. They are on the rampage when it comes to delivering an experience that involves the highest-available quality.
Here’s what that means. First off, Google is adamant about not causing any sea-sickness or other glitchy inconveniences during the virtual reality experience. Specifically, it’s bullish on issues like frame rate and image latency. Basically, Google wants to be in control of the VR experience as a whole, rather than just supplying the headset. So, it’s working with developers like Epic and Unity to tweak the operating system.
Only Certain Phones Enter Your Daydream
But it goes beyond that. Probably the bigger component of quality control is Google’s high standards for the phones that will be used with Daydream. Every phone that can be used with Daydream is approved and designated Daydream-ready. These phones need to have high-resolution displays, along with sensors and top-of-the-line graphics.
Here are the phones currently ready for Google Daydream:
- Pixel
- Moto Z
- Huawei Mate 9 Pro
- Huawei Mate 9
- Zenfone AR
- ZTE Axon 7
All of these are powered by Android Nougat.
Now, it might be an inconvenience to go out and buy a phone to be able to get compatibility. But the Google Daydream, like its predecessor, Cardboard, is easy on the price, building in the ability to get the phone that is also included as part of the equation. The Google Daydream itself runs just $79.
The phone of your choice slips into the Daydream with a suspicious amount of freedom. It doesn’t need to be locked to a specific location and is supported by six bumper nubs in the compartment. Phones up to 11.5 mm wide will fit.
When Google Daydream is marketed, it’s not with big screaming headlines proclaiming it perfect for porn. That’s the way of the world. But one can’t help but wonder how much the developers may have been considering the illicit side of VR when designing this unique new headset. It is perfect for VR porn.
Porn is pure viewing (well, for the first five minutes or so), which sets it apart from gaming or other kinds of exploration. Not even VR porn is really about a simple cool factor, like being able to look inside a volcano or virtually visit a city. The aims are at once more pragmatic and more transgressive. Porn viewers are not there to say “how do they do that?” unless we’re talking about the flexibility of the female performers. We have higher expectations, and Google Daydream is a leading candidate to consistently meet them.

2017 will be exciting for Virtual reality. I’ve been planning to get HTC or the rift in the next coming weeks. But after CES, I think it would be better to wait for more VR HMD updates before getting one.

I haven’t tried this yet, but I’ve wondered about the fit. Looks like it kind of slides in without being set in place. I guess it works well like that though?
