AliceX has made a name for itself as the leading brand in VR webcams. And amazingly, they offer free signups. I was a bit skeptical about what “free” really meant, so I did an investigation, and I’m here to report my findings.
It’s also fitting to write this article as a sort of follow-up since vrporn.com was the first site to break the news of the launch of AliceX a year go.
It’s still pretty early in development and it can be a little tricky to set up. I’ll be posting a setup guide at the end of the review because right now, we’re taking a good look at AliceX and what they offer that other webcam sites do not!
Yes, you can really try for free
First things I noticed is that yes, you get to hang out with real girls on their free signup. Though you can’t expect anything too naughty, you’ll have to pay for that.
What makes AliceX different from other cams?
Well, it’s in virtual reality to start, that’s a pretty huge difference. You interact with the girls in a 360 VR environment. You’re anchored in place, but they can get up and move around in front of you. It’s not just a bland screen or bed with a plain white wall behind it. While you can’t get up and explore the room (yet?), it does offer a much-improved cam girl experience.
Turn around and check it out. It’s a full 360 environment, and it looks good. But don’t forget to turn back and take a look at the girls either. They’re pretty cute, and seemingly all natural too! The only downside I saw with this is that they don’t have all the girls available all the time… Cause damn, some of em are nice…
The camera technology that AliceX uses is pretty top notch, either a Terpon or WebEyeVR, I honestly couldn’t tell which. The cams were nice and smooth and did not look pixellated. Nor did they seem to have any issues with gigantism or parallax issues. It was definitely HD. The video ran at a consistent 30fps, which was more than adequate for watching on an HTC Vive. There didn’t seem to be any dropout associated with low bandwidth either. You know, that crappy stuttering or sudden screen blur you get with some cam-sites.
The girls themselves are healthy and attractive looking. Curves without looking fat, and they don’t look like twigs. I didn’t notice any obvious scars from boob jobs gone wrong. Their outfits (free cams) do keep them covered up a bit, but “Oops” happens and that’s fun too! Anyways, if you get one in a private room, the clothes should come off pretty quickly. And of course, they do have all the basic toys. (Sorry guys, I’m not posting pics, you’ll just have to find out yourselves.) Just remember, different days, different times, different girls… Sometimes it pays to check their schedule, which IS posted, and come back another time to get what you want from who you want.
Setting up an account
Setting up an account is easy, and does not require any credit cards or anything other than your email address. It gets you access to 3 rooms and 3 different models. You can go in, type back and forth with the girls, chat with them, and they’ll tease you by showing you just enough to make you want to go private with them. (That’s kinda how they get paid after all) Now, the girls DO talk more than type. English isn’t their primary language, but that’s actually a lot of fun. Especially when you’re trying to talk dirty and describe what you want them to do. It can lead to some pretty entertaining and hilarious moments. Some of the girls DO speak English though, some better than others, and of course, some of them are more talkative/interactive than others, but it’s like that everywhere.
VR Interface
The VR Interface is laid out pretty well and it’s very straightforward to use. Look down to bring up the menu, then stare at a menu option until the green ball /cursor fills up. It’s non-intrusive and doesn’t get in the way and annoy the hell out of you when the girls are moving around. It does, however, blur the screen when the menu is up. If you bring up the menu by accident, it’s an easy fix. Just look away from it for a couple of seconds. The one thing I thought was lacking was the ability to type/chat with the girls in VR. On second thought, though, that’s also not a bad thing, because VR is supposed to be interactive, your hands should be free for other things, and really? Who wants an annoying text box HUD to distract them? The Vive has its own built in mic. Just use it.
If you absolutely DO have to type something out, though, you’re going to have to drop back to 2d in order to do it. So, get over that shyness/embarrassment and speak up. If I managed to do it, you can too. If you’re curious to see how VR will change the way cam-girls operate, this is definitely a great site to check out.
Two issues
Number one, and perhaps the easiest to fix, is that models are inexperienced with this technology. I got a nice little dance from a headless chick with no legs…
Seriously, it was a floating pair of tits with arms and a crotch with stumps… Kinda creeped me out there for a moment… Then I thought about what I could do if women actually came that way… No noise, no way to run away, easy to store in a suitcase… Perfect… Well.. Kinda… I digress… While I do appreciate the effort that was involved in pressing tits to the camera, for that truly in-your-face feel… It just doesn’t work out very well in VR. And that’s just something that the models are going to have to learn through experience. Just how close CAN they get to the camera without fucking things up.. Depends on the girl, the camera, the position, and what they’re trying to do/show. Well, at least it won’t until it’s TRUE VR porn… But this is definitely a nice substitute in the mean time.
Number two…
Setup… And this one isn’t really anyone in particulars fault… WebVR is still new. It hasn’t been released for the release versions of mainstream browsers yet. Because it’s new tech… The website instructions on AliceX.com didn’t work for me. They don’t clearly mention that you need the development branch of chromium. The link to Chromium Canary is here, as well as a couple pics on how to enable webVR… That being said, they DO tell you how to enable webVR, but they don’t mention the find feature, which really makes it a LOT easier. IF you decide to try it, here’s a handy little guide to go by. Otherwise, use Firefox Nightly like I did, and be sure that SteamVR is already running when you tell AliceX to launch in VR. Still, doesn’t auto-launch SteamVR…
And after downloading Chrome Canary’s latest version here….
Step 5. Realize that typing in “enable webVR” was the wrong search function and you just failed even harder…
Once you have Chromium, Step 1, browser bar, type in “Chrome://flags” Step 2. Ctrl+F for find, or click the button below the X and click on find. (This saves the headache of looking) Step 3, type in “webVR” in the find box, step 4, click “enable”.. Close out and reload your browser, and best of luck to you… I failed to get it working. No, I do not know why it didn’t work for me. Even after spending quite a while with it, all I got was…
Clearly, there’s still a few issues with chromium. Perhaps someone smarter can figure this out, but I gave up and tried the Firefox version.
Which VR Systems does it support?
I know for a fact it works on Vive and Oculus if you follow the setup (more on that later). I’ve also been assured that it works with GearVR, Daydream, Cardboard, etc.. While I would have enjoyed checking that out, I’ve got an older G3 that just can’t do it… However, even if you don’t have a VR setup, this works in 2D and is probably the best cam site around just on account of the high-quality webcam’s they use. You won’t have any problems with pixelization or crappy stuttering because of low bandwidth here.
How I made it work.
Windows 10, 64 bit, HTC Vive. Firefox
Setting up WebVR in Firefox
Step 1. Go to this link here and download Firefox Nightly yes, this is Firefox’s development branch. Yes, you need it because a regular browser just won’t cut it.
Step 2. Go to this link here and download the 64 bit version of OpenVR_api.dll Side note, if you’re trying to do this in 32 bit, you can, but why? OpenVR_api.dll is a file that is needed in order for steam and the vive to realize something is in VR.. Fuck it, it’s magic.. You just need it. Download it, and save the file to some place you can find it later. I chose, “C:\openvr\” and just dumped it in that folder.
Side note, don’t use the ” marks. I put them there for reference.
Step 3. In Firefox Nightly, click on the browser bar and type in “about:config”
Step 4. A search bar opens up top, type in “dom.vr.openvr.enabled” It’s set to false by default. Set this to True
Step 5. In the same search bar you just used, type in “gfx.vr.openvr-runtime” double click on it, and set it to “c:\openvr\openvr_api.dll” Or wherever you moved that DLL file to.
Step 6. Close Firefox Nightly, Open it back up, Check out AliceX.com, get into VR mode and enjoy.. HNGH! (Make sure SteamVR is running first.)
Step 7. Spin life around, bend life over, drop life’s pants, scream “WHO’S THE DADDY NOW!?!?!”, and let life be on the receiving end for a change… Just because… You know, more often than not, it’s life dicking you over with something that should work, but just doesn’t.
So… why is WebVR tricky?
WebVR isn’t just used for AliceX. WebVR is something new and challenging. It lets you do more with your Vive today than you could do with it yesterday. I did find a couple other places on the web where webVR works. It’s a development tool, still being worked on. It’s new technology, and it’s cool to see working as it’s being developed. Today it works for porn and sketchfab. Tomorrow, it could work for online web browser games on facebook. And you’re now a step ahead of everyone else on knowing how to use/get it working. That being said, for non-porn applications, here’s what people are working on with WebVR
Conclusion, should you give AliceX a try?
Yes, checking it out is free, it works, and it’s cutting edge technology. Just be prepared for a little work setting up webVR. The future of VR webcams is amazing, once the technology works well it’s hard to see how non-VR cam girls will be able to compete. The difference between watching a cam girl on a monitor vs in a VR environment right in the middle of the room is pretty amazing. It’s literally like having your own personal stripper/toy show right in your living room.
