HTC has teased ViveCon 2021 as “the VR event of the year” and has promised to unveil “game-changing VR headsets, software, and platforms” that already have fans, consumers, and pundits clamoring for more info. Until ViveCon’s keynote event begins on May 11th, though, little is certain about the biggest reveal of all. Except that the highly anticipated next-gen HTC Vive VR headset is coming.
Something is Coming
More or less confirmed in a tweet featuring the imposing image above, HTC’s latest hunk of VR hardware is still largely a mystery. After the lackluster performance of Vive Cosmos (compared to the original Vive’s impressive sales and lifespan), many are hoping this soon-to-be-revealed headset will be a true successor to the much-loved original device. Hopefully, one that includes the expanded active capabilities provided by HTC Vive’s newest line of motion trackers. With full tracking capabilities as standard, the forthcoming addition to HTC’s headset lineup could push HTC Vive into even more VR porn viewer’s homes. Already a powerful immersive media device, the added tracking would make it perfect for higher-end adult experiences in which you’re planning to utilize more than just your eyes.s
Don’t Count Your VR Chickens
Close readers of HTC Vive’s recent tweets may have noticed a trend in word choice. “Let’s get down to business.” “Ready to work in virtual reality?” In fact, a tweet dated May 1st was far more declarative, clearly stating that the soon-to-be-revealed tech will be “transformative” for “your business.”
This doesn’t exactly send excitement for a new consumer-grade headset soaring, now does it? Enterprise and industrial VR use has been a priority of HTC Vive since consumer-level competition became more fierce with the rise of Quest 2. If HTC Vive were to make one last serious attempt at capturing a consumer market, now would be the time to launch it.
Update:
While it should not be regarded as confirmation of what will be revealed at ViveCon, Protocol is reporting that the two new HTC Vive devices set for unveiling at ViveCon will be Vive Focus 3 Business Edition, a new standalone obviously geared towards enterprise use, and Vive Pro 2, a PC VR headset for high-end use and more demanding application. Protocol also reports that both devices will be available before the end of May. Whether the reported internal document leaks Protocol is reporting on are completely valid isn’t clear but it does fit with both HTC Vive’s stated agenda for 2021 and with most expectations of ViveCon’s big reveal.

From the leaked info it doesn’t sound like either will be any sort of direct competition with the Quest 2.
