Holodexxx, one of the VR porn world’s most popular and technically impressive adult CGI games and the only one to bring exclusive photogrammetric scans of pornstars like Riley Reid and Marley Brinx to virtual life, should be familiar to any dedicated VRPorn.com gamer. With a strong and growing fanbase, the continued success of Holodexxx seemed all but guaranteed. All it needed was a spot on the world’s most popular online game distribution platform, Steam, and the sky would be the limit. Steam, however, had other ideas.
The Steam Dance
Steam recently denied Holodexxx the chance to be distributed via its online store for the third time, vaguely citing “pornography” as the reason. Trying to meet what were assumed to be Steam’s guidelines on pornography with three separate versions of Holodexxx – a “PG-13” non-nude Riley Reid dance, the nude visually interactive Meet Marley (Brinx), and the significantly more interactive Lady Euphoria – Holodexxx was denied each time.
Since revising its previously hardline anti-pornography stance in 2018, Steam has had a rather flimsy grasp of that controversial P-word for a while now. Holodexxx not only encountered this prohibition in the past but has seen other developers of adult games somehow get their creations through, often due to sneaky day-one patches that remove all censorship. After three heavily modified resubmission attempts – and, according to Holodexxx, around $20,000 in development costs – the highly lauded adult VR game has been banned from further attempts to join Steam.
Steam’s Secret Porn Stash
With Holodexxx’s appeals a continuing issue, Steam went after “Casey’s Condo,” an adult app by Kamasutra, taking it offline just three hours before the official verdict on Holodexxx was delivered. Meanwhile, numerous adults-only games continue to be available on the platform. Add the existence of Eek! Games’ explicit 90s-sex-comedy-styled House Party featuring real-life YouTuber LetyDoesStuff, and things start seeming quite lopsided.
It appears Steam’s issue with Holodexxx may have stemmed from its use of photogrammetry to capture and render its models into VR characters, making the fact that LetyDoesStuff even recorded House Party dialog with her mouth full to simulate the sound of a mid-blowjob chat intriguing, to say the least. The reason given by Steam for Holodexxx’s continued rejection was the same each time: the platform does not allow pornography. That, however, is open to interpretation. Holodexxx suggests Steam has an internal “Hey’s [sic] Code” for adult-oriented content and that it has a responsibility to outline this code to developers hoping to find a place on the platform. Whatever the real reason for denying adult Steamers a chance to enjoy Holodexxx just as they can other adult games, the continuing ban means Holodexxx has had to turn to other outlets, like its valued place as part of the VRPorn.com family.
Onwards and Upwards!
Determined to bring its unique adult VR adventures and experiences to Patrons and new gamers alike, Holodexxx is also committed to helping other developers of adult VR games avoid the same collisions with Steam. I am interested to see if Steam flip-flops on this. The publicity certainly has helped Holodexxx
