Chinese VR hardware company arpara announced a pair of forthcoming headsets that could push other VR hardware designers and manufacturers to increase their focus on user comfort – along with the standard impressive visuals. Due for release in August 2021, the pair of headsets, one more elementary model, and an expanded all-in-one not only tout greater user comfort thanks to a lightweight, compact form factor but share a display setup many pundits are already suggesting could be a game-changer for consumer VR.
A Beautiful Couple
Both of arpara’s forthcoming headsets feature the same display system and setup, allowing the company to boast of its impressiveness twice rightfully. With 1.03-inch 2560×2560-resolution micro-OLEDs providing a combined viewing resolution of 5K x 2.5K, arpara is touting the devices as offering five times more detail than other leading headsets. The much-loathed screen-door effect is tackled with a high aperture ratio while system latency is brought down significantly by a 1μs response time. All of this should be pretty appetizing to any VR user looking for a hardware upgrade, but that’s far from the end of arpara’s apparent appeal. The standard (and tethered) VR headset coming from arpara is extremely lightweight at just 200g yet boasts impressive specs: a 95° FOV and 120Hz refresh rate chief among them. Though not exactly a complete or comprehensive VR setup, this more accessible unit would be an excellent choice for any VR user who enjoys highly physical experiences. The all-in-one device adds a little weight to reach 380g but beats the other headset’s 3DoF with 6DoF while rounding out its features with inside-out head- and hand-tracking, up to 8K video resolution, a 90Hz refresh rate, wired or wireless use, and the power of a Qualcomm XR2 keeping it all running super-smoothly. With the basic issue arpara headset available for preorder at $599 USD, expect its more advanced partner to add a few hundred to that price.
Losing Weight, Gaining Freedom
VR porn fans have a few reasons to consider these latest hardware efforts from arpara, the most significant being their lightweight, compact form factors. When in the throes of an epic erotic experience in VR, you want as little influence from the outside world as possible. Decreasing device weight is one of the more valuable steps towards realizing that freedom from the physical burden of using real-world hardware.
Expected to start shipping in August, arpara’s standard-issue VR headset is now available for preorder. The all-in-one device appears to be hot on its heels, with a definitive release date yet to be announced but anticipation already mounting.
