As expected, the Virtual Reality technology is receiving a lot of love and is turning out to be the next hotbed of innovation for various tech companies. At the Game Developers Conference 2017, LG’s first VR headset prototype running on Steam VR has recently been featured.
Till now, HTC was the only company to have its Vive VR headset running on Valve’s Steam VR platform and now this South-Korean tech giant also joins the club. LG and Valve are said to be working together since the end of 2015 for their combined VR headset project.
LG Steam VR Headset Specs
This is just the first prototype in making and the specs for the final consumer product could be a bit different. But, we still have some rough idea of what could be expected with the actual headset! The LG Steam VR Headset packs a 3.64 inch of OLED diagonal display with 1440 x 1280 pixel resolution per eye. The display comes with a fairly good refresh rate of 90Hz along with a 110-degree FOV.
In terms of built quality, the headset is said to host a plastic head strap along with a lock mechanism, just like the one in PSVR. The good thing with LG’s headset is that users can flip up the goggles without the need to remove the entire headset. This feature would come pretty handy to users to instantly pause from watching or gaming, or other VR experience and switch back and forth between the real and virtual worlds.
However, as LG runs on the Steam VR platform itself, another technology used by the headset is almost similar to the Vive, and, yes, this too comes with room scale capabilities.
The controllers have quite a similar look to the Vive’s, however – the top is shaped up in elongated pentagons. For now, you can see the circular touchpad, a system button above it, and two navigation buttons on either side of the system button.
Richard Taylor, an assistant research engineer at LG said that headset will be priced very competitively to the Rift and Vive headset and so we could expect the final price to be around $600-$700.
We can expect few of the changes to the final consumer version. There is no word as of now when is the company planning a retail launch for the device, but we expect it to be coming this year itself.

This looks awesome. Just hope they’re not as pricey!

So LG has also joined the competition. I hope we will get to see a great innovation in VR sooner.

It seems that as many players join the VR technology, we may soon see a smartphone like marketplace to choose from multiple options
