Acer, the company that makes cheap Windows laptops, is throwing its hat into the virtual reality ring sooner rather than later. Going out the gate with an affordable $300 headset, Acer is part of Microsoft’s new virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality push.
Acer headset will lead the charge by offering a cheap $300 alternative to the more expensive Oculus and HTC Vive headsets. At $300 dollars, Acer’s headset is 200 dollars cheaper than the Oculus and 400-500 dollars cheaper than the HTC Vive. Wow. If Acer’s product is as high-quality as they make it sound, the elder VR headset makers could be in trouble.
Flip on
Acer’s new headset has some cool advantages over the competition. For example, the headset flips up rather than sliding down over the user’s face. This flip-up mechanism is close in function to that of the Playstation VR. Most users familiar with the Playstation VR say that they prefer putting on their headset in this manner. Flipping the headset up and down allows users the flexibility to switch their interaction modes between the real and virtual worlds.

Tracking
Beyond this nice flipping, Acer’s headset has another sweet advantage over its more expensive big brothers. Its trackers are built into the headset itself. This feature makes the setup more convenient for users. Instead of having to set up and place a laser tracker system in your place of VR-ship, like the HTC Vive, Acer’s built-in trackers can track the space that you are in automatically.

Beyond removing the need for exterior tracking devices, Acer’s built-in trackers also give the headset inside-out tracking capabilities like Intel’s Project Alloy. This means that the virtual world and the real world can be intermixed to create “merged” reality applications.
On-the-fly
Because the trackers are attached to the headset, the trackers can scan the environment on-the-fly as you move. This is similar in function to the Microsoft Hololens. Potentially, Acer’s headset should allow you to move around anywhere. If the CPU and software can concurrently keep up with user movement, scan, and understand 3d space, the headset should be able to generate a 3d virtual world over the real world that is safe enough to prevent users from running into things.
Apps with Windows 10
Another great thing about working with Microsoft is the virtual reality compatibility that comes with Windows 10 anniversary update. This aspect of the Acer’s headset may be the reason VR porn aficionados may want to pick this headset up over other. Microsoft’s new update has a full virtual reality interface that allows users to stay in virtual reality while using any app on their system. This is great news because it means you can browse, collect, and organize your virtual reality porn all while wearing your headset.
The Problem
Acer’s tech has one big problem. Yes, it lacks any kind of motion controllers. This means that gamers or VR-Porn-heads will have to use their stupid old mouse and keyboards or an archaic Xbox gaming controller. It’s possible that the trackers could track object and hand movement, yet this will not be an end-all solution.
Trackers probably won’t be able to track movement that occurs underneath the headset, er, the place where most VR porn users have their hands. That said, it should be too before some enterprising developer comes up with a compatible motion controller for Windows VR. Microsoft may even have one in the works.

This sounds like a complete standalone package, built-in-tracking, flip-ON and other interesting features…. Though i want to see how will it compete against Intel’s Project Alloy which is back by a formidable development plan

I’m pretty sure they’re working on a motion controller. Fingers crossed!

The inside-out tracking is great. But no motion controls seems like a pretty big area lacking.

first this looks super cool and secondly the flip on feature is just amazing because the issue of removing headset and putting it on again and again is pain in ass.
