“Hi, Speed,” came the announcement of Apple’s October 13 live event. After revealing its latest lineup of improved Apple Watch and iPad devices in September, the month that usually sees an iPhone focused announcement from Cupertino, all serious pundits were convinced the next major revelation would be the next generation iPhone lineup. They were right, of course.
Deeper and Deeper Still
Announcing a lineup of four iPhone 12 models – iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max – Apple gave the public a chance to see where mobile tech is heading, how much it would cost, and just how revolutionary it may be for media consumption.
Along with improved cameras, 5G connectivity, increased LTE performance, A14 Bionic processors, and other features and upgrades, iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max offer a LIDaR (Light Detection and Ranging) system that allows users to take 3D scans of a given area. AR gaming is already utilizing LIDaR to enhance virtual worlds and AR elements, but Apple is bringing this tech to everyday devices in such a way that anyone can take advantage of 3D scanning. Sending out an array of infrared dots to create a field of 3D mappable points. Though not visible by natural human vision, the infrared dots can be detected by night vision and make the basis of LIDaR’s world detection abilities.
LIDaR Leads to Awesome AR
LIDaR sets the stage for advanced AR use, and though it might not be fully utilized just yet, Apple’s presumed AR glasses will require some aid from a connected iPhone. Adult users looking for more exciting sexual experiences should be very excited by Apple’s lean into AR. iPhones have long been integral to the adoption of new technologies and the improved accessibility of porn. Allowing people to watch streaming XXX clips on their phones while waiting for a train or taking a work break or sitting in a lecture hall meant the now-connected world had to recognize how prevalent and popular pornography really is.
As Apple’s incomparably influential mobile devices head toward more advanced AR, both Apple enthusiasts and keen porn watchers will benefit. Adult sites and studios are already putting their weight behind VR and AR porn; a development this significant will only strengthen the adult AR industry. Instead of watching a fully immersive virtual sex scene, LIDaR will enable users to scan their environment and invite a virtual partner over. Said partner, whether an original CGI creation, motion-captured pornstar, would know the boundaries of the physical space, allowing them to move and function much like a real physical being. Assuming your LIDaR is on point, you could even capture yourself as part of the environment, a comfortable place for your AR partner to land. What has been lacking from VR and AR porn – adaptability, occlusion, substantive depth, world-reading – is now right there on the horizon.
