New evidence to support a five-year-old revelation that Apple was building a custom operating system tailored for AR use has appeared online, adding weight to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s claim that Apple would release their first piece of AR headset in 2022.
In November 2021, a research report by Kuo shown to MacRumors claimed the headset would land sometime in 2022’s fourth quarter and come equipped with dual processors, one with comparable power to Mac’s M1, the other devoted to handling sensor input and processing. The OS on which this as yet unnamed device would run has largely been left out of the discussion but recently appeared in code shared at Apple’s open-source GitHub repository. “realityOS” – or more specifically “com.apple.platform.realityos” – appeared in App Store code upload logs and was noticed by iOS developer Rens Verhoeven in mid-January. Apple committing code to its GitHub “repo” all but confirms the new OS as being on the cusp of launch.

With anticipation for Apple’s entry into the VR/AR hardware market only increasing, and with leaks suggesting a very strong competitor not only to Meta (née Oculus) Quest 2 but to Meta’s forthcoming Quest 3 and “Project Cambria,” it’s clear Apple’s headset will be in hot demand upon release. For those with adult use in mind, Apple’s device may prove a more expensive but ultimately more satisfying option than anything from Meta’s Quest line.Likely to be saddled with a price tag eclipsing $2000 but offering a slim, light, streamlined form holding remarkable power, not to mention adherence to Apple’s famously trend-setting styling, the device currently being spoken of as Apple View is bound to thrust AR into much more widespread use. For VR porn fans already salivating at the potential of adult AR content, this is a very exciting development indeed.
