Ever wonder what it’s like to be a pornstar? If so, then you aren’t alone. The truth is that VR porn has brought the audience closer than ever to the action but it’s still a rare treat to get a glimpse of what actually goes on behind the scenes of a large-scale porn shoot. Fortunately for us, the folks over at BadoinkVR have decided to share some backstage footage and the results are quite revealing.
The Set
The set of a virtual reality porn shoot is drastically different from that of a traditional movie. The first thing you notice when stepping on the site is the abundance of camera gear. Instead of the one or two bulky cameras you normally find on the set of feature films, you see dozens of small digital devices all delicately arranged in futuristic contraptions. The cameras’ black lenses peer out from their rigs like spider eyes capturing every bit of movement while the staff sits silently by watching the live feed.
The Cameras
The specifics of the gear depend on the shoot, but a common setup involves a ring of Go Pros all positioned adjacent to one another. By placing a dozen or so of these action cams back to back, the director can capture a full 360-degree field of view and do so without losing any resolution. When a full 360 view isn’t necessary, directors will often use a more traditional camera body and just mount two or three close together. This 180-degree technique is more akin to what the director at BaDoinkVR is doing when he uses the mirrorless Sony camera and specialized wide angle lenses as seen in the behind the scenes video.
The Talent
The actual equipment isn’t the only difference we see backstage. As the director clearly points out during his interview, there are quite a few changes to the actual flow of the shoot as well. Conventional methods involving things like lighting all have to go out the window when shooting in VR. Because you can’t reliably position the stage lights without obscuring the view, the majority of VR porn is now utilizing natural lighting as opposed to artificial, something which was unheard of in the industry just a few years ago. It isn’t only the crew that has to adapt to all these changes. The talent also has to alter the way they behave so that the cameras can capture the scene in the most immersive way. Particularly, when the scene involves a first-person male perspective, the actor has to lean his head way back in order to accommodate the camera.
The Crew
Even the editing team can’t rely on old habits when dealing with VR porn. Without the luxury of jump-cutting from one camera position to the next, the video editors have to get creative when transitioning between clips. The final length of each individual shot is often much longer than traditional video and this is a direct result of the single camera angle. In VR, you can’t cut back and forth between clips without completely ruining the immersive experience of the video and often this means that entire scenes are exported as a single take.
Behind The Curtain
VR porn is forcing film directors to rethink so many aspects of video entertainment. Whether you have big dreams of being a pornstar yourself someday or you’re just a curious fan, it’s always fascinating to get a glimpse of what goes on behind the curtain.
