Since the inaugural Consumer Electronics Show took place in New York City in 1967, the annual has hosted the unveiling of many of history’s most influential tech developments. This year, the now Las Vegas-based meeting of tech industry leaders and early adopters was no different with several exciting showcases capturing the attention of tech fiends worldwide. In the world of virtual porn, anticipation for a glimpse into the future of VR and AR sex was high. As ever, CES did not disappoint.
A major presence at CES 2020, Pimax announced an upgrade to its 5K Plus dubbed the 5K Super, along with five other headsets. With a 180 Hz refresh rate that trumps any other available VR device, the 5K Super should pressure other tech developers to at least match the smooth visuals and movement, and the reduced eye strain a 180 Hz refresh rate brings. Pimax’s other unveilings included the Vision 8KX, already being called a significant leap forward for VR, and the entry-level Artisan VR headset, which brings consumers 6DOF tracking and a max 120 Hz refresh rate at a $499 price point. For VR porn fans, these announcements are especially promising with fluid, seamless motion a long-standing goal of VR porn producers and viewers alike.
High End Reveals Big Ambitions
Pico was a strong presence at CES this year, unveiling specifications of its upcoming Neo 2 and Neo 2 Eye headsets. Set at $700 and $900 price points respectively – and with that extra $200 adding a lot more than just eye-tracking – Pico’s pair of Neo 2 options won’t thrill budget-minded users. Thankfully, the company also showed off its Pico VR Glasses. Intended for casual use and likely to be priced accordingly, this more accessible 3DOF headset tethers to Android smartphones for lightweight mobile operation.
Aimed at demanding industrial, enterprise, and military use – and therefore likely to make its way onto the more ambitious VR porn sets – the next iteration of VRgineers’ XTAL was revealed to be forthcoming. Already in use by the US Air Force in pilot training programs, the as-yet-unnamed next-gen XTAL brings users dual 4K (or “8K”) LCD displays, foveated rendering, and 16 millions pixels of intelligently focused virtual reality. The option to add AR or MR capabilities shows even more promise for this already game-changing offering from VRgineers.
Death of AR, MR, XR Greatly Exaggerated
Many tech pundits were surprised at how strong a CES presence was had by Augmented, Mixed, and X Reality innovations. Companies from Panasonic to Samsung to Nreal previewed AR, MR, and XR devices with the former’s streamlined (and apparently Steampunk-inspired) HDR goggles garnering plenty of attention. Not much is yet known about the stylish VR headwear, a trait it shares with Samsung’s mysterious AR wearable. Quietly slipped into a presentation of its Gait Enhancing & Motivating System (GEMS) exoskeleton, Samsung’s glasses came with no official announcement from the South Korean giant.
Putting VR Porn First
There’s much to be excited about when it comes to the future of VR, AR, and MR, both near and far. The porn industry’s habit of adopting game-changing tech early and putting it to excellent erotic use should finally erase doubt in any porn fan’s mind: the future of communication, entertainment, and, yes, porn lies in the virtual. What news from CES 2020 has you most excited, and what are you hoping the rest of 2020 holds for VR porn?
