One of the premiere light field VR companies, OTOY, showed off some amazing updates that will potentially make VR porn videos much better. For those of you that don’t know, light field technology is the next big format that will reshape virtual reality videos. Instead of capturing two-dimensional or even three-dimensional video footage, light field technology aims to capture how light bounces off objects. As a result of obtaining different light information, light field videos and photos allow users to switch perspectives, focal points, and capture angles after the fact.

All of this is ideal for VR and especially VR porn because, as OTOY demonstrates, their approach produces 3D interactive videos that are both more interactive and more realistic and lifelike. Currently, OTOY is using the Unity game engine to present their light field video captures. Using Unity tech has helped OTOY. It has enabled them to create a form of video capture that allows users to move through photorealistic 3d space (see video below). Fueling this technology is a unique renderer called the Octane Renderer which was developed to work with Unity. More than just a 3d 360 capture, OTOY says that their “video light field movie” has “huge game level size navigatable volume.”
Moving Beyond Current Limits
In the video below, you can see how this would work. If OTOY’s light field technology were used in adult virtual reality videos a much wider field of interactivity would become possible. If this was the case, in virtual reality porn videos, users would be able to move and navigate around a large virtual 3d space. As of now, most virtual reality adult videos trap users in one key spot where they view the action. Within this key place, users only have freedom to move their head. In other words, users can only look around from one vantage point.

Full 3D Movement
In contrast to this limited system, OTOY’s system would potentially allow a user to both look and move around in a light field video environment. As you can see in the early portions of the above video, movement space would not be unlimited. Instead, it appears that OTOY’s technology provides tracks or roads wherein users can move while observing ongoing environmental changes.
Video Road
For an adult virtual reality experience, even a limited video-road could provide interesting results. For example, light field video whorehouses could have roads leading to unique rooms wherein users could navigate to a peep show of their choosing. Similarly, I can imagine scenarios where this technology could allow users to navigate (although in a limited fashion) a light field filmed strip club. In such a scenario, users would be able to move and observe performers of their choosing from a specific vantage point.

This all sounds like a fantastically perverted wonderful dream, I know… Trust me, I would not believe you if you told me. Yet OTOY’s technology is coming sooner rather than later. They already have limited samples that you can try out now if you own a GearVR. If you don’t have a GearVR, their gallery works in a standard web-browser.
Keep in mind, without a headset this content doesn’t provide a super-immersive experience. Working with OTOY, Samsung has implemented OTOY’s renders into their virtual reality web browser (see video below). Essentially acting as beautiful backgrounds, you get to sit in a light field scan while browsing the web. By checking out these early releases, you can get a taste of the VR future that is to come!
