Back in 2015, Facebook announced the support of 360-degree videos and photos on its social networking website and till date, Facebook has offered support to more than a million 360-degree videos and 25 million 360-degree images on the platform.
In order to unleash the potential with 360-degree videos and images and enjoy them in the true sense, the social networking mogul recently announced its own Facebook 360 app on Oculus Rift and Gear VR headsets. This allows users to take some parts from the Facebook website to these VR headsets.
Using the Facebook 360 App
In order to use the Facebook 360 app, you need to sign in to your Facebook account. Once you log in, you will be greeted with a library of content from various organizations, media companies, artists and even your friends. From the Gear VR app itself, you can even follow their pages and profiles.
Also, you can save the videos and photos to be viewed at a later stage and can even share it back to your Facebook page. Of course, you will be able to access your own 360 content to watch in your Gear VR headsets.
To add a bit more of content engagement, Facebook has added its famous “Reactions” in a similar way as you do on your regular news feed.
However, all you can do right now with the Facebook 360 app is watch the 360 content. The support for live streaming 360-degree videos is currently unavailable which Facebook should most likely add in coming versions. Also, you won’t get the integrated friend-finding feature that was discovered last year on Gear VR.
The Facebook 360 app is currently available only on the Gear VR platform and the company said that it would soon bring it to other VR headsets as well.
This is just the beginning towards getting more 360 content of the VR platform. We hope Mark Zuckerberg’s proposed concept of social gathering where friends can connect with each other in VR in several avatars and hang out in VR space soon becomes a reality!
