The virtual reality (VR) camp is expanding greatly with the with the launch of the Playstation VR (PS VR) and PS4 owners are receiving the new contender in the VR market with open arms. The overall PS VR user commentary on internet forums, such as /r/virtualreality, has been mostly positive.
In a recent post I detailed how to enable the PS VR Cinematic Mode with almost any HDMI connected devices such as the Wii U, Xbox One, PC, and Mac, which enables the PS VR to act as a personal VR viewer. There are a number of benefits of this discovery.
With the newly discovered PS VR processor unit function, PS VR can play PS4 games, view all sorts of VR entertainment, and web browsing in private using the PS VR head mounted display (HMD), all in the in the absence of a monitor or television and now with other random HDMI connected devices after the initial setup. This is great news for PS VR owners.
So what if you are using a Vive or Rift and want to play, watch, browse and utilize the full power of your PC in private and without ever taking off your Vive or Rift?
Check out, BigScreen VR Beta currently available for Vive users in the Steam Store and in the Oculus Home Screen for Rift users.
BigScreen VR
BigScreen is the bridge closing the gap on VR users having to leave VR and constantly take off their HMD to fiddle with a program or website, the majority of the time.
A brief overview, BigScreen lets users hangout in a virtual room where you can watch movies, browse the web (including vrporn.com), play PC games, and use all your existing Windows applications on massive virtual screens that dwarf standard computer monitors.
It is also worth mentioning that BigScreen rooms can be set to public and private, this is a great feature because it lets up to four people site in a virtual room while seeing what is on their computer screens.
BigScreen VR also has a number of environments to chill in, this includes a luxury apartment, a camp fire site and other more cosmic places.
It is actually relaxing for certain daily tasks that you otherwise would not think about in the immersive nature of VR.
What this means for VR porn:
I tried accessing vrporn.com and Naughty America VR while in a BigScreen VR room to test what potential the app has for VR porn.
It should also be mentioned that I wrote the majority of this blog post while wearing my Oculus Rift. While I was testing, some active rooms included a streaming of HBO’s new series West World (which I am personally enjoying) among others.
So, when it comes to viewing content on vrporn.com and Naughty America VR movies in Bigscreen I recommend downloading the video file.
I recommend this because it gives the user the choice to launch a third-party VR media player from their desktop.
My reasoning – the in browser VR content viewing of most VR stream sites just didn’t seem to have the ability to become immersive and remained a 2D image on a an rather large giant cinema screen. This was also true for experimentation browsers using WebVR such as Chromium or Firefox Nightly.
In defense of this issue, Bigscreen VR is still in beta and it is free.
Don’t Worry There is a Work Around:
I am not one to leave VR enthusiasts hanging, so I did a bit of experimenting. This work around involves a third-party VR media player be cause those applications in most cases can be launch from the desktop.
The third-party VR media player I recommend downloading is Whirilgig on Steam, which currently costs $3.99, but it is worth the small investment for hours of uninterrupted VR time.
Small Epiphany:
This post caused me to have a small Epiphany, users in the Bigscreen app need to be cautious about what they are streaming in their rooms. Bigscreen users can set the room to public or private. If you are going to watch VR content and adult content that is not suitable for people over the age of 18 make sure you set your room to private.
This is one of the main instances were the new emerging technology of VR and VR related content fall into that “gray area,” so it is just better to be safe.
Keep in mind, younger target audiences will be drawn to the PS VR, PC VR and smartphone VR.
If you have any other cool tips or tricks post in the comments below or get paid to write about your discovery for vrporn.com.
