Augmented reality is believed to be the next big game changer in the tech world and tech titans like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, and others are already flexing their muscles to lead this market. Apple made the first move three months back by announcing its Apple ARKit which opened up the flood gates for other developers to create exciting new AR projects.
While quickly responding to this, Google has announced its own ARCore SDK to give developers easy access to AR development on the Android ecosystem. With Android being the largest mobile platform at 80% of market penetration, Google’s attempts will certainly make augmented reality available to a large number of consumers.

Google’s ARCore aims to compete with its three main abilities: motion tracking, environmental understanding, and light estimation. To put it briefly, motion tracking will work to determine the user’s position by capturing visual data from the smartphone’s camera sensors. It also aims to understand the surrounding environment by detecting different feature points and planes. Finally, the light estimation will allow developers to light the virtual objects in the same environment.
I am waiting for developers to try some exciting AR porn applications that give users the ability to interact with hot chicks while they’re sitting right beside them on their bed or couch. The implications for virtual reality porn are very exciting and technology like this could definitely revolutionize the sex entertainment industry.
In a prepared statement, the company has outlined these three abilities:
- Motion tracking: Using the phone’s camera to observe feature points in the room and IMU sensor data, ARCore determines both the position and orientation (pose) of the phone as it moves. Virtual objects remain accurately placed.
- Environmental understanding: It is common for AR objects to be placed on a floor or a table. ARCore can detect horizontal surfaces using the same feature points it uses for motion tracking.
- Light estimation: ARCore observes the ambient light in the environment and makes it possible for developers to light virtual objects in ways that match their surroundings, making their appearance even more realistic.
ARCore to Be Available Across Platforms
To make it easy to develop AR applications and ensure a faster roll-out, Google says that ARCore will work across multiple platforms like Unity, Unreal, Java/OpenGL from the very first day of its release. Additionally, Google will also be releasing AR web browsers which developers can use to create AR enhanced websites that run both Android’s ARCore and Apple’s iOS/ARKit.
The Google Tango was the company’s first project to bring powerful AR projects to life. However, implementing Tango’s key features required additional sensors and high-end cameras which were available only on high-end smartphones. On the other hand, ARCore is a software only solution. This will allow Google and Android developers to make compelling AR experiences available to more consumers in a short time.
Right now, ARCore SDK is available to the owners of Pixel Handsets (running Oreo) and also Samsung Galaxy S8 handsets (running at least Android Nougat). To ensure a faster roll-out, Google is also working with other manufacturers like LG, Huawei, ASUS and others, and targets “100 million devices at the end of the preview.”
Google has officially called ARCore their “next step in bringing AR to everyone”. More details regarding ARCore will be unveiled later this year.

Man, I almost feel bad for Apple at this point.

This is a smart move by Google … As rightly pointed out here, it would have taken more time to implement its Tango project as its difficult to convince every manufacturer to make phones with certain high-end hardware requirements… A push of AR through the software looks as a more concise approach to make AR available to large number of consumers in short time… Would like to try the ARCore soon.
