Yesterday, on March 15, Google released a free app called “Welcome to Light Fields.” The software showcases “the emerging technology Google is using to power its next generation of VR content.” Google released the application in Steam VR and it is available for the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.
Understanding How Light Fields Work
With this new technique, Google is hoping to allow users to capture still images in virtual reality in a better way. The process aims to produce a more realistic sense of presence by accounting for motion parallax within the 3D image. It also allows for “extremely realistic textures and lighting.”
Google demonstrated this by using a special camera (below) which captures 3D images. The images can be explored in virtual reality just like they have been rendered in a game engine such as Unreal or Unity.
Google’s LightField application makes use of volumetric recording techniques that capture the environment in its totality. This is different from other methods because it shoots the scene from multiple angles at once. This allows users to move their head in the 3D space and be able to see the scene from different perspectives.
Initially, as you enter the scene in VR it might look just like a 360 stereoscopic photo. But as you move your head within the space, you will realize that the surrounding space will move just as if you are standing right there instead of the world being effectively ‘locked to your head’. The volumetric 360 experience is much more rich and immersive in comparison to static 360. Using this technology, it would certainly be exciting to see 3D captures of nude babes in VR Porn.
Paul Debevec, Senior Researcher, Google VR said: “When you’re actually in a place, the world reacts to you as you move your head around: light bounces off surfaces in different ways and you see things from different perspectives. To help create this more realistic sense of presence in VR, we’ve been experimenting with Light fields.”

A lot of VR tech companies are working on improving their VR display technology and delivering immersive rich experiences to users. For example, Oculus currently unveiled its multi-focal display tech with eye-tracking assistance and Varjo recently showcased its Bionic Display‘ that is capable of delivering Retina resolution visuals.
With display tech evolving so fast, the next generation of VR Headsets is poised to deliver rich and immersive visuals like never before.
