Tech giants from across the globe are working to create completely wireless and untethered virtual reality headsets. In one such similar attempt, computing giant – Intel – has recently showcased its new Project Alloy VR headset that aims at ‘Merged Reality’. ‘Merged Reality’ or commonly known mixed reality, creates an experience of both augmented and virtual reality.
Introducing ‘Merged Reality’ with Project Alloy
It was back in August 2016, when Intel for the first time pitched the concept of ‘Merged Reality’ and introduced us to its plans about the same.

With the Project Alloy headset, Intel aims at putting all the computing prowess within the headset itself with an absolute untethered experience. This means that no additional sensors, cables, computing attachments or extra things being attached.
The Intel Project Alloy VR headset will feature built-in Intel 7th Generation Core Processor, a RealSense camera, a vision processor, a battery wrapped around the head, a fish eye lens and other sensors. It being a completely wireless solution, users get complete freedom to freely move around in the surrounding space.
In a keynote at the ongoing CES 2017 in Las Vegas, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich made a formal announcement stating “We are genuinely excited about Project Alloy and where this takes virtual reality.” He also said that to make this project a reality soon, Intel has tied-up with several OEM partners and will start shipping the VR headsets as early as Q4 of 2017.
Intel Demoes Multi-Player Gaming Experience with Project Alloy
At the CES event, Intel also demoed the multi-player gaming experience using the Project Alloy. The demo shows two players wearing the Project Alloy headsets and playing a shooting game in a room. The demo shows that the VR headset being absolutely wireless, gives the user the absolute comfort to move around the entire room space.
Intel says that the major feature of Project Alloy headset is the built-in RealSense camera. The RealSense makes it possible to accurately perform hand-detection and positional room-scale tracking. The company also claims that the headset can even accurately determine “collision detection and avoidance.”
