Sony’s PlayStation VR Headset (PSVR) is currently one of the most widely sold VR headsets in the market. PSVR offers its users some of the best VR experience is terms of immersive rich content and graphic quality associated with VR games, though these users have been complaining about one aspect – the tracking quality associated with the headset.
Currently, PSVR uses a camera setup which detects light – at the front and back -from the wearer’s headset. However, this setup seems to be a bit faulty in place as bright light and reflections can interfere with the existing camera orientation.
Improvements with the PSVR Tracking System
It seems that Sony has acknowledged this fault and identified this issue with its existing method of VR headset tracking and it is working with a new solution for a better and accurate tracking.
A new patent from Sony Interactive Entertainment which was filed last year in June has now come to light earlier this month. This patent hints at a new and improved tracking method that is quite similar to HTC Vive’s Lighthouse Tracking Method.
As seen in the image above, an external projector will use lights and mirrors for mapping the player’s real-world movements into PSVR. As the light continuously interacts with PS4’s camera, this would lead to providing more accurate and real-time tracking.
The patent reads this as a “method for determining an orientation of a photosensor of a controller with respect to a projector” wherein the formed bean will detect the location of both PSVR’s “head-mounted display” and a controller.
New Tracking System to be Wireless
In addition, the patent listing also says that the tracking device is wireless and would connect with the PS4 computing device wirelessly using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, radio frequency or similar other protocols. This could be an interesting lead, as it could potentially mean that Sony is working on some wireless headset solution that is likely to see the light-of-the-day in near future.
This can also mean better and accurate room-scale tracking with some of the Virtual Reality Porn games like La Douche and Custom Maid. This is just a patent at the moment and does not guarantee any application in coming time. But we hope Sony soon comes with such a solution addressing the need for a better tracking for its PSVR fans and users.

It would be great if they can start rolling out an upgrade in VR along with every PS upgrade release.
