As the biggest tech event of the year – Consumer Electronic Show 2017 – is just to kick off at Las Vegas, we have Chinese technology giant – Lenovo – making some major announcements. The company ventures into the Virtual Reality segment by announcing its VR headset based on the Windows Holographic Platform.
As per the images released by The Verge, the Lenovo VR headset seems to draw serious design inspiration from the Playstation VR. Moreover, the company targets to put just 350 grams of weight to its final product, which would make it much lighter than Oculus Rift (470g) and HTC Vive (555g).
Lenovo VR Headset Design Aspects
Looking into its design, the Lenovo VR headsets suspends lenses in front of user’s eyes that are secured by a strap. This allows the display to swing in and out of the user’s view, giving the user a quicker access to the real world.
One of the major design aspects that Lenovo brings to its VR headset – and the one which would be supported by most of Windows Holographic models – is the use of two front-mounted cameras with 6 degrees of freedom for inside-out room scale tracking. This means that unlike the existing Rift and Vive headset, the Lenovo VR headset won’t require external sensors.
The Lenovo VR headset is also expected to feature an OLED display panel with 1440 x 1440 pixel resolution, which is higher than both – the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. However, as no demo model for testing is available for the moment, it would be difficult to comment on the image quality of the headset.
Expected Pricing and Computing Support
Last year in 2016, there were reports about major tech companies like Asus, Dell, HP, Acer and Lenovo to be working on affordable Windows VR headsets. It seems that the Chinese giant is targeting a price of anywhere between $300-$400, which is much lower than Rift and Vive and even extremely competitive with even the affordable PSVR headset.
As this Lenovo VR headset is expected to run on windows 10, the company has also simultaneously announced its VR ready laptop – The Legion Y20. The basic model of the laptop will feature a 15.6-inch display, NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1060 graphics support, 16GB of RAM and 2TB of storage and seventh-generation Intel i7–7700HQ processor.
