Earlier this year at the 2017 Games Developer Conference in March, we got a glimpse of LG’s upcoming SteamVR Headset, and ever since then, we have heard little about LG’s plans to proceed further. So if you’re at all wondering whether LG’s VR plans are still alive or not, we can say it’s getting some fresh oxygen for the time being.
LG’s SteamVR Headset has been recently spotted at the Korean VR Festival with the official Silicon Valley Virtual Reality Twitter account posting a fresh image of the headset.
From the new image, it seems no major changes were introduced to the LG steamVR Headset. LG’s VR Headset will host a modular flip-up design which allows users to switch between the real and virtual worlds just with the visor movements. The VR controllers also look quite similar to the ones that work with the HTC Vive.
VR Displays with Reduced Screen-Door-Effect
It looks like, with its first entry into VR business, LG straightaway wants to address the underlying issue of screen-door-effect in VR displays. A recently filed patent by LG shows a VR Display that is “capable of alleviating a screen-door effect,” and thus improves the image quality of VR displays.
Screen-door-effect is basically the existence of gaps that appear between pixels of an image in a VR Display and are usually more prominent because of the lenses you watch through. One of the ways to address and overcome this issue is to have higher resolution displays of the likes of 4K and above, similar to the ones we have seen in the Pimax VR Headsets.
However, instead of increasing the resolution of its display, LG wants to approach this matter in a different manner. As per the patent, a “light diffusion matter” will be placed between the display panel and lenses. The patent reads that it “diffuses light emitted from a light-transmitting area of a display panel to a light-blocking area of the display panel” and “improves the image quality of the display.”
It is very likely that LG could possibly implement this new technology on its upcoming SteamVR headset. The earlier proposed specs for the LG VR Headset shows an OLED VR Display with two panels each hosting 1440 x 1280 pixel resolution. The display is expected to have a 90HZ refresh rate and 110-degree-FOV. These improvements in VR Display technology will surely aim towards delivering better visual quality in VR and delivering your favorite porn videos with razor-sharp clarity.
There is still no official release date of the LG SteamVR Headset. The arrival can be expected sometime in early 2018.

It’s a pretty interesting concept but I don’t think it makes up for the resolution issue with most HMDs today. Only time will tell though. Good article! 🙂
