The Lynx was initially developed as a business and enterprise device before its creators pivoted to promising a sub-$1000 consumer-grade device. Lynx has made yet another shift in planning and turned to Kickstarter for support. Reaching its goal of more than $346,000 in just 15 hours, Stan Larroque and his cohorts have solidified a release strategy for this now hotly anticipated VR/AR hybrid headset.
Outfitted with Ultraleap hand tracking as its primary input method, two IR cameras, 1600×1600 resolution at 90Hz, and a Snapdragon QR2 chip running the show, Lynx may not beat its main competitor, Oculus Quest 2, on specs alone. That’s where privacy comes in. The Lynx R-1 may appeal to potential Quest 2 users who’ve waited due to hesitancy over Facebook’s data accumulation practices.Launch Date Looming
Covered in detail by VRPorn.com back in July, the Lynx R-1 doesn’t appear to have changed in any fundamental fashion since then. Estimated to ship in April 2022 but with no overt Kickstarter goals yet to be announced, some caution from potential backers may be required. Lynx may have reached its sizable funding goal in just 15 hours, but whether this enthusiasm will materialize or go the way of numerous other overly ambitious Kickstarter campaigns remains the be seen. What is for certain is that Lynx is continually refocusing and refining its agenda.
Virtual sex already delivers amazing experiences, which VRPorn.com viewers know all too well. Hybrid headsets are undoubtedly the way of the future for VR porn fans and fans of adventurous adult entertainment more generally. Lynx R-1 may not be quite as affordable or accomplished as Oculus Quest 2, but this could be the answer for those who don’t want to be part of Zuckerberg’s ecosystem.
The Time is Nigh
According to an announcement from Larroque, Lynx will begin delivering Lynx R-1 units between November 10 and 15. Citing the international semiconductor shortage as the reason for the delay, Larroque also noted that Lynx is not afraid of competition from Meta, Pico, or Apple, all of whom are expected to deliver mixed reality devices around the same time. Larroque also noted in his YouTube address that he fully expects the terms “virtual reality” and “augmented reality” to be displaced by the widespread adoption of “mixed reality.”

I like that other companies are stepping into the space besides FB. I like my Quest 2, but the more options, the better as VR tech evolves.
