Virtual reality headsets and software are currently an expensive proposition for PC lovers and console owners alike (PSVR). That said, most analysts agree that VR prices will fall as market penetration increases. Despite a future of lower-cost VR headsets, the production of virtual reality content will remain much higher than the production of non-virtual reality content.
Why is it so expensive?
This is because virtual reality content requires higher resolution cameras, 3d laser capture devices, and expensive 360 video capture devices. Additionally, all of these devices require extra processing power to edit and produce usable virtual reality content. Therefore, powerful computers must be included as part of the large cost required for producing virtual reality content. Today, I will provide a virtual reality content capture set up that will allow amateur virtual reality porn producers to make virtual reality content on the cheap.
3D Budget Amateur Porn
Previously, I wrote about getting started with a ultra-cheap 3d video-capture set-up. That system captures 3d holograms using a Kinect. It requires that producers mix their porn holograms with a 3d interactive computer-generated world. Today, in contrast, the set up that I propose will be less interactive and slightly more expensive.
POV 360 Amateur
That said, today’s approach to capturing 360 video content will provide results that are closer to the virtual reality porn content that you already watch. Today’s setup was designed with the goal of recreating POV virtual reality porn. As this is the most popular virtual reality porn type, amateur porn producers can jump right into the game with content that everyone will be familiar with! The solution that I detail here, is not exactly cheap, but it is far cheaper than the technologies and products being used by the virtual reality porn pros.
Expensive Pro Set-Ups
Pro virtual reality porn set-ups can run anywhere from 6,000 to 50,000 dollars depending on the complexity of cameras involved. For example, many virtual reality video content producers use the GoPro Omni All Inclusive, Spherical 360, Model Hero 4 6. This maw-faw crazy-ass multi-camera set-up runs a show stopping 5,000 dollars! It cost so much because along with a custom camera rig, this system also includes six high-quality GoPros. Processing this video also requires a beefcake PC as well.
Gear360 + Galaxy S6 + GearVr = 360 POV Amateur Porn
My solution produces content that is very similar to this system while being roughly 400ish dollars. The solution for directors or producers on a budget is a combination of the Gear 360, a Samsung Galaxy S6 and a decent PC for editing footage. That said, a PC to edit footage is not necessarily required as you can export 360 videos straight from the Samsung Galaxy S6.
Gear360
Currently, you can find a Gear 360 for $199 on Groupon. This is a great deal. The Gear 360 shoots in 360 degrees at a combined resolution of 4K. It combines front and back cameras that have fish eye lenses to make a full 360 shot. Although you can use the 360 without a Galaxy S6, S7, or any other modern Samsung device, I don’t recommend doing so. Many of the settings are not available without Samsung’s Android App. This app is only available for the Galaxy S6 and up.
Galaxy S6
That said, the Samsung Galaxy S6 can be had for around 200 dollars used on eBay. Although it is nearing a two-year birthday, this is still a great phone. It has a beautiful high-resolution screen, a snappy processor, and a great camera that offers pretty decent low-light shooting abilities. It does have a meh battery life.
GearVR
One again, although not directly required, a Gear VR (which commonly can be found for $40) can be used with the combination of the Gear 360, Samsung S6, and the captured video content. The Gear VR will allow amateur virtual reality porn producers preview their footage before uploading or editing it further.
Reset Expectations
Starting out, let me say you should not be expecting to produce a super high-quality video with this suggested amateur set-up. That said, part of the fun in amateur filmmaking is the sometimes low-quality blurry visuals. Although lower quality videos can be distracting, if done right, low-quality amateur videos appear raw and visceral. So with this in mind, you shouldn’t be disappointed if your video comes out a bit blurry or out of focus. I am saying this because the footage captured by the Gear VR does not come close to the crazy mega GoPro set up mentioned above. That said, For less than $500 dollars, I think this set-up is serviceable. It provides clear enough footage for producers who want to get their start with amateur virtual reality point-of-view porn videos.
