Something revolutionary has occurred recently. While Manyakis’ work primarily relies on 2D animation techniques, he has recently made the transition to virtual reality with ‘Splatfest Eve,’ an uncommon merger between 2D animation and virtual reality. The result?

The Process

A short animation like this could take a while to cook up. Manyakis was kind enough to share his conversion process on his blog. To nail the technical aspect of the scene in virtual reality, using 3DSMax, he started by animating and rendering a 3D scene. He then used that reference to animate in 2D with Photoshop, convert the 2D animation back to 3D for VR in Max, create the stereoscopic background in Max, brought it all together and then added the extra eyecandy effects through After Effects.
This is obviously a super simplified version of a rather tedious process. It does, however, paint a picture of how meticulous and arduous the whole process is.
Quality Factor
Anything worth making takes a long time and a lot of effort to come to fruition. With that in mind: I am not sure if Manyakis will make any more jewels like “Splatfest Eve,” without some notable demand. Whether that’s the case or not, I am glad we could at least have this video to show us the potential of well-done CGI in virtual reality!
