Ever since its launch, Samsung’s Gear VR has received a lot of love from the VR community. Moreover, its affordable pricing has made this smartphone-based VR headset as the most preferred choice especially within early VR adopters!
However, owing to the rapidly increasing competition in the VR industry and the unprecedented growth in over the last year, Samsung has been constantly flexing its muscles to provide its customers with a more intuitive and engaging VR experience. Earlier this year, Samsung extended the Gear VR functionality by introducing its new wireless controller for richer and immersive room-scale VR experience.
Now recently, the Korean tech giant has teamed up with Nyko Technologies as an official partner with the wireless gaming controller PlayPad VR for the Gear VR headset.
Nyko’s PlayPad VR Gaming Controller
While observing closely, the Nyko PlayPad VR is a console-type gamepad and is fully compatible with the Samsung Gear VR headset. One of the interesting features of the PlayPad VR is its unique design where it can be easily clipped in front of the Gear VR headset while replacing the front side non-functional plate.
This is a convenient way to carry your PlayPad along with the Gear VR anywhere, with a very little chance of being forgotten. The design and button layout are quite similar to the other gamepads in the market having a D-Pad, action buttons, shoulder buttons, and dual joysticks. To its back, Nyko has added separate L3 and R3 buttons as well!
While looking at its other features, it can connect with your Samsung smartphone over Bluetooth and charges via a Type-C USB cable. While connecting with your Samsung smartphone, it uses the Android HID controller which eliminates the need to do any kind of separate button mapping.
The Nyko PlayPad VR controller is an officially licensed product of Samsung Gear VR and hence all the gamepad compatible games on the Gear VR can be played using the PlayPad VR.
The Nyko PlayPad VR will be unveiled at the E3 conference and will arrive at a retail pricing of $49.
