Leaks don’t usually come from internationally famous, high-up inside sources but during Facebook’s Q4 earnings call in late January, CEO Mark Zuckerberg let loose a very intriguing piece of information about the future of Oculus, whose Quest 2 proved one of the holiday season’s most in-demand tech items.
“We’re continuing to work on new hardware [which] will fit the same platform, so the content that works on Quest 2 should be forward-compatible, so that we’re going to build one larger install base around the virtual reality headsets that we have.”
- Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Facebook

Zuckerberg didn’t divulge much more than this and left many assuming he was referring to a forthcoming Quest 3. After all, Quest 2 proved a landmark VR device and a huge seller, making a general upgrade expected. While this would no doubt please those eager for more power, more immersion, and more freedom – and while there are clearly areas where Quest 2 could be improved upon – there’s a strong chance Oculus has something a little less predictable up its sleeve. The cross-compatibility Zuckerberg noted at least confirms the device will utilize Quest infrastructure, but it doesn’t necessarily mean a Quest 3. Perhaps a vastly different VR device than any Facebook/Oculus has produced thus far, one which will share space in the Quest world but offer unique perspectives and usage opportunities.
The biggest takeaway from this murmur, coming as it does from just about the most authoritative source there is on the subject, is just how quickly Facebook is moving ahead with further Oculus developments. Regulatory issues both at home and abroad, and a not-so-indirect savaging from Apple CEO Tim Cook may have dented the social media giant’s reputation somewhat of late. Still, Zuckerberg appears quite confident in Oculus’s current and future market placement.
Quest for Porn Perfection
For devoted VR porn fans, this high pace of hardware development from the maker of the world’s strongest selling VR headsets can only suggest something more, well, “manageable” may be headed their way. Even the most sleek and compact currently available VR device remains a bit too cumbersome for truly comfortable use while you’re in the throes of self-applied pleasure. With Apple clearly angling for dominance of the wearable VR/AR device market with its highly anticipated (and long-awaited) Glasses looming over the horizon, Oculus could be aggressively developing a competing product of similarly lightweight, casual design.
Such a VR/AR hybrid device is eagerly awaited by porn viewers who don’t wish to be completely cut off from the world when virtually nutting on their favorite star’s chest. Also likely to be the long-awaited functional bridge between VR and AR entertainment, it seems inevitable that, whether it’s the hardware Zuck teased earlier this year or another project entirely, whether it carries the Quest name or another, the next device from Oculus could be its most important yet not only to Oculus itself but to consumers, VR/AR developers, and most of all Facebook.
