As spectators waited for the opening game of the Carolina Panthers’ football season, something lurked in the dark, biding its time before pouncing on an unsuspecting crowd. A mixed reality panther mascot leapt into the stadium, tore up the opposing team’s flag, roared, then waltzed out of there like it was nothing. But 5.9+ million views on Twitter is far from nothing.
Animated with the Unreal engine by The Famous Group, rendered within a live feed of the stadium space, the panther appeared to be prowling the stands, visible to those in attendance via the jumbotron – no phone or app needed. The panther animation may not look as fluid as the latest immersive VR gaming experience, but it does bring the latest-state MR/AR to the public much sooner than many anticipated. Although the 3D mascot could not be viewed from stands by the naked eye, that day is inching closer all the time.

Imagine a porn convention, strip club, dating app, or porno streaming service with this tech enabled. Feature dancers could pre-perform an entire tour of strip shows, sending out digital content packages to each venue for re-mapping and projection. Hell, those same recordings could be sold direct to home viewers, giving them a premiere 3D experience like no other. In effect, this tech remains quite close to current VR and AR capabilities.
