Joanna Angel is no amateur when it comes to porn. At 36 years old, she’s built a very successful career by using her talents both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. As someone who’s directed adult videos in the past, Joanna couldn’t resist the opportunity to get a backstage look at a recent HoloGirlsVR film shoot. What she found there was shocking even to her.
The Interview
Joanna recently did an interview for AskMen where she shared her first impressions of VR porn. She came to the HoloGirlsVR shoot with some fun ideas about constructing the scene and directing the camera but she quickly realized that her old techniques wouldn’t work in VR. After having a few of her ambitious ideas shut down by the scene’s director, Joanna admits, “I was so baffled. He just violated all the porn laws that I have spent the past 13 years trying to master.”
Instead of moving the talent around the scene like Joanna had expected, the directors restricted their movement to a tiny space in the center of the room. Never before had Joanna seen such a stationary display of intercourse. Based on the extremely limited amount of interaction and movement among the characters, Joanna began to doubt the effectiveness of this new medium. She says in her interview, “I was worried that what was just shot was going to be the most boring scene ever.”
First Impression
These doubts didn’t last long, once she put on the headset and viewed the results her perspective quickly to changed. “When I put on the glasses and was shown the footage, I totally got it. It was incredible. You could so clearly hear every decibel of the female performer’s heavy breathing, you could grab her boobs, and I could basically reach my hand in and give Manuel a hand-job had I wanted to.”
Popular Genres
After watching the footage, Joanna was extremely curious about the overall direction of virtual reality porn. Her behind-the-scenes conversations with industry insiders revealed that “girlfriend experiences” were one of the most popular genres among new VR enthusiasts.
According to these producers, the introduction of VR had induced a seismic shift in the industry. The trend was now headed away from the extreme fetishes that dominated the 2D market and towards a more traditional form of intercourse that emphasized intimacy and realism above all else.
Joanna summarizes this nicely in her interview when she says, “At the moment, extreme gaping anal sex and stuff of that nature is not what the viewers want. In 2D porn, we are always trying to create a fantasy; in VR porn, we are creating a reality.”
Not many people are adventurous enough to attempt extreme BDSM or anal insertions in their real lives and the increased immersion of virtual reality seems to bring these same reservations back to porn.
Joanna’s Predictions
VR’s influence is still in its infancy but Joanna rightfully envisions a future where this new technology radically alters the way we relate to porn. She predicts, “in the near future I foresee VR porn going to the next level and becoming AR. Instead of the viewer being transported to the porn set — the performer will be transported to the viewer.” While we’ve yet to reach that point yet, there’s little doubt it’s coming soon.
