The technology wizards over at IKinema have come up with an ingenious way to use the existing HTC Vive tracking technology to capture realistic human movement. They have named it Project Orion. Their Project Orion system has ramifications both for games that use human characters and for virtual reality porn application that use realistic 3d characters. VRPorn.com has many videos like this. This is one of the areas where virtual reality porn demonstrates the most potential, but it is also the one that needs the most improvement. Right now, 3d rendered virtual reality porn experiences often feature highly cartoonish and unrealistic representations of females, and they can have awkward animations. IKinema’s technology could be used to enhance representations of females and other 3d characters in the near future.
Old Fashioned Motion Capture
For those that don’t know, capturing human movements can be a very complicated process. For years, movie studios have been using a variety of techniques to capture human movement. Most of these techniques fall under the name of “motion capture.” Some of the most well-known examples of motion capture are found in the Lord of the Rings movies. In the Lord of the Rings, multiple characters were computer generated and animated using motion capture. For most people, the motion capture character that stands out the most is that of the character Gollum. To capture his unique movements, Andy Serkis, the actor that played Gollum, had to wear a sexy tight blue suit with glowing orbs. To capture facial movement, an even hotter set of accuracy-enhancing tracking marks were drawn in a specifically patterned way on his face. The suit, alongside these marks, allowed computers to interpret the motion in film footage. Using 3d computer rendering programs, the movements were then applied to the character of Gollum himself.
A HTC Vive Lighthouse Solution

As can be seen in the following video, IKinema’s solution bypasses the crazy sexy suit with the glowing orbs. Instead they rely on the technology found in the HTC Vive’s Lighthouse sensors. In comparison to traditional motion tracking techniques, this smart solution will be more cost-effective and quicker, while also requiring far less manual labor and computer work. HTC’s recent offer to openly license Lighthouse technology has made this creative solution possible.
How it Works
IKinema’s Project Orion also relies on the technological backbone of SteamVR. Valve’s SteamVR uses a six-point tracking system that combines Lighthouse sensors and multiple HTC Vive controllers. Project Orion tracks bodily movement by tracking a controller attached to a subject’s foot, the base of the back, the hands, and the head. Of course, attaching controllers is awkward. I am sure this system will be replaced by small HTC Vive trackers soon enough. As can be seen in the video, the software can track the controllers in real-time providing enough data for the software to infer the movements of an entire human body. This inference-based animation system is called inverse kinetics.
Implications
As I previously argued, the applications for this technology will be far-reaching. Smaller developers will now have access to motion capture technology that can produce results almost as good as the high-tech Hollywood studios. This means that character animations like those in interactive virtual reality porn applications and games could be realistic and convincing even with a small indie budget. Anyone who has tried computer generated 3d porn knows that character animation is key for making adult experiences seem realistic and enjoyable. With all this in mind, IKinema’s solution will bring us closer to the amazing VR 3d interactive sex that we have always dreamed of.

Yeah this looks very cool. Vive is leading the way in the motion tracking department.

hahaha yes you are right, I didn’t knew that this is how they manipulate the faces of characters.
