It makes me uncomfortable to think of the child-friendly nature of Nintendo consoles being harnessed for pornographic experiences. That said, when it comes to porn, people will watch porn on any device they can. So why fight it? This idea about porn being everywhere makes me remember years ago when I was working in a remote forested region of Thailand. A local hunter showed me his old Nokia flip phone which was full of tiny little pornographic videos and pictures, I thought to myself, he was using this tiny little phone to wack-off in the jungle. I digress…
Today, the idea of using the Nintendo Switch as a virtual reality porn device just became a real possibility. In fact, Nintendo President Tatumi Kimishima just said that the highly transformable Nintendo Switch used for a Nintendo produced virtual reality experience. Without being clear on when the Switch would get virtual reality capabilities, Kimishima said: “we will add VR to Switch once they figure out how users can play for hours without problems.” He must be referring to fixing the issues related to the sense of nausea that one can feel when using VR headsets for too long.
Oh no! It sounds like Nintendo is experimenting with virtual reality again!
Remember the 1990’s? Nintendo tried and failed with the weird product known as the Nintendo Virtual Boy. For those of you who don’t remember or were not alive, the virtual boy was a mess of a portable console that only produced red and black images. There were no head straps to secure the device. There was no head tracking either. Instead, users had to lean towards the device which was quasi-mounted to a table on a strange walker-like stand. Since the disastrous release of the virtual boy, a few aspiring modders have released a couple of adult roms for the system (See below). These roms serve as demos of what could have been if Nintendo’s console didn’t tank and became an open platform.
If the Nintendo Switch does enter into the virtual reality gaming field, it will face some uphill battles. That said, for the most part, the Switch is well suited to become a virtual reality-ready console. First of all, its form factor is fairly well suited for virtual reality. This is because, as one of the first super transformable console/portable hybrids, its main screen can detach from its controllers when used in console or tablet mode. On the one hand, Nintendo envisions a future in which when a traditional console experience is desired; people will plug their Nintendo Switch into a dock that is connected to their living room TV.
Portable mode = VR
On the other hand, they envision that people may want to use their Switch in a more personal portable manner. The Switch can also transform into a tablet. In this mode, controllers can optionally be attached thus providing a portable gaming experience. When the controllers are plugged into the side of the Nintendo Switch, it looks like the Wii U. The difference between the two is that all of the central processing is done within the Switch’s tablet-like central element. This alleviates the need for a console to stream games to it.
The powerful central screen element provides the potential for future virtual reality uses of the Switch. All Nintendo would have to do is make a headset like the Google Cardboard or Gear VR that held the central screen element of the Nintendo Switch within it. To control games, the detachable motion compatible Switch controllers could be used while wearing the headset/screen unit.
Nvidia Tegra and the 720P Issue
In addition, the Switch is technically powerful enough to run VR games and videos. Actually, the Nvidia Tegra chip powering the Switch is much more powerful than contemporary phones that run Google cardboard or Google daydream. Therefore, processing power shouldn’t be a problem either.
The only issue that may or may not be solved for awhile is the relatively low screen resolution of the Switch. As of now, it stands at 720P resolution which is lower than any other VR headset. Perhaps Nintendo will release a Switch 2 with a 1080P screen resolution. If the Switch is successful, a move like this would not be surprising. The market is changing. With Sony and Microsoft doing incremental updates with their systems this is not out of the question. Nintendo has done similar things in the past, especially with their portable systems (e.g. 2DS and many other portable iterations). To conclude, we may not see a Nintendo Switch VR this year but in a year or two, gentlemen, start your engines!

The portability feature and the easy attachment/detachment of controllers makes it a good bet for virtual reality gaming or content viewing…. Though for more immersive content, Nintendo surely needs to improve on the screen resolution

This seems to be the clearest avenue yet for Nintendo to get to VR. The processor is strong enough, though the resolution indicates that Nintendo isn’t secretly working on turning this in to VR. We will see.
Cool pics!
LOL did you really get vr porn in to your Virtual Boy?
