This is Good for VR Porn: Lytro VR Tech is Improving

In the past few months, I have discussed how Lytro’s 3d video technology could revolutionize virtual reality videos and virtual reality porn. Their technology goes above and beyond the simple 3D 360 point of view videos that currently dominate VR porn sites now. Soon, videos shot with Lytro technology will be released with detailed 3d effects that are far immersive than the virtual reality porn videos that we watch now.

What makes Lytro Video Different?

Instead of using two cameras to capture 3d stereoscopic data, Lytro takes a completely different direction by focusing on capturing volumetric video. This is a completely new format. There is not even a Wikipedia entry for volumetric video. Anyways, volumetric videos capture data in a way that allows computers to recreate the scene in 3d with a specific volume (hence the volumetric video).

Changing Viewpoints

This is important for virtual reality because it allows both stereoscopic video and positional tracking to occur within the video. Yes, we already have 3d stereoscopic video but position tracking is lacking in all current 360 video content. This means that you can not move. In 360 videos, head tracking allows users to move their heads, however, the position of the viewpoint is always locked to a specific vantage point in the scene. Lytro’s volumetric video would allow this vantage point to be adjusted while users actually watch the volumetric video.

The camera that Lytro uses to shoot volumetric video is a honking beast. Seriously, this thing is a giant. I hesitate to call Lytro’s monster a camera at all. Instead, I will refer to it as a hexagonal demonic light capturing array. Their array is amazing and scary at the same time. Apparently not a prototype, this demonic camera array contains 95 light field lenses that have a 90-degree field of view.

This many cameras allows the array to capture an increased amount of volumetric data. This means that in virtual reality volumetric videos, more user movement will be possible. That said, the user shouldn’t expect Lytro’s set up to be able to shoot videos that allow providing a huge amount of freedom. Even this massive array will only provide users the freedom to move around a small 3×3 foot area. Rather than creating an environment for exploration, Lytro’s volumetric video will provide a better sense of depth and 3d in an effort to provide more immersion.

Beyond video, Lytro also has 3d audio effects that accompany the volumetric video. Lytro is not saying if the audio recording technology that they are using is any different than conventional audio tech. After seeing pictures of this array, I can almost definitely assure you, my good readers, that it will be some time before this technology improves our virtual reality porn.

Perhaps 2-3 years. Obviously, Lytro’s technology is going to be as expensive as all get out to rent or purchase. Beyond acquiring the demonic array, processing such video is also going to be expensive. That said, when the first porn company gets on the Lytro-wagon, we will have the most immersive bonerfying virtual reality porn you can image.
