Social VR is slowly evolving. It’s bringing new, interesting ways for people to engage with one another. However, if asked, how would you feel about going on a blind date with someone in virtual reality? Honestly, for someone like me, who is always a bit nervous to meet a new girl in-person, dating in VR might make me feel a lot more comfortable and relaxed.
While virtual reality Dating Games are already quite popular within the VR community, a new dating show called “Virtually Dating” has been launched by Condé Nast Entertainment. This is a five episode series and is being released on Facebook’s new Watch Platform. The show puts two real people together on a blind date in virtual reality. This interesting new concept allows two people to get to know each other through their VR personalities before deciding if they make a good match in real life.
Virtually Dating – A VR Blind Date
The first episode of the Virtually Dating show features John, who wants “someone to capitalize on my own happiness, and vice versa, whatever that looks like,” and a girl named Shelby who is a hedge-fund office administrator who is looking for “someone who can make me laugh.”
The bodies of both these people are scanned to create their photo-realistic 3D avatars in virtual reality. Both, Shelby and John are given HTC Vive headsets with sensors to track their movements. Both of them meet up in outer space which is quite different from the normal bar or coffee shop. Check out for yourself what follows.

The great thing about Virtually Dating is that you can take your date anywhere you can imagine. This can be any of your favorite romantic destination across the globe. The producers have also said that future episodes will see the couples transform into different avatars that involve a post-apocalyptic world full of zombies. Another one of its trailers shows a man transforming into different avatars like a gorilla, a bear, and even a dragon.

Dating shows have evolved a lot over the past few decades due to the changing interests of audience members. By adopting virtual reality as a platform for dating shows, the main intent of the producers is to make the concept of ‘blind dates’ even more exciting and interesting.
