VR
We’ll start off with an easy one. VR is an acronym for Virtual Reality. According to Wikipedia, Virtual reality, also known as immersive multimedia or computer-simulated reality, is a computer technology that replicates an environment, real or imagined, and simulates a user’s physical presence and environment to allow for user interaction. Virtual realities artificially create sensory experience, which can include sight, touch, hearing, and smell.
360° view
Refers to the viewing angle capacity or recorded videos. 360° view competent videos provide immersive experience to users by allowing them to view a full circle or rotational panorama of the whole region surrounding. Viewer can swivel or pan their head to any direction with losing the video perspective.
3D
3-Dimensional videography is a technique used by film makers to condition the human visual system into an illusory perception of depth on image/video recordings to enhance inter-activeness. This technique can make viewers feel more involve in scenes. In a typical video, images appear to be flat, but in 3D – images have defined structure (width, length, and height) and appears to be more realistic.
AR
Augmented Reality is type of Virtual Reality that aims to copy a specific environment, fictional or non-fictional, through a computer interface. The virtual scene made through AR is designed to enhance or augment the user’s sensory perception of the VR world they are seeing or interacting with.
Binaural Sound
Refers to the type of music that is recorded through two separate microphones and transmitted through two separate channels to create a stereophonic effect that can produce a realistic 360° audio perspective. Binaural (‘using both ears’) sounds are used on virtual reality videos to mimic a pragmatic sense of belonging or interaction to computer or camera generated characters and environment.
FPS
Stands for Frames Per Second. FPS is the measurement for how many successive images per second a camera can handle or the number of times a unique sequential image a screen is refreshed. Typical high-end cameras used for recording 3D, HD or Virtual Reality content have about 30 and 60 fps – higher the fps the greater the quality of videos are rendered.
HD
High Definition is a measurement used to define and classify the clarity or resolution a captured image, video and sound a camera can produce. It can also refer to the quality of image and fidelity sound recorded.
HTC
A Taiwanese consumer electronics company that produce different devices like Smartphones, Tablets and Cameras. Founded in 1997, HTC initially manufactured notebook computers but eventually focused on touch screen hand-held devices the following year. They are credited for building the first Microsoft powered mobile phone. In 2015, HTC unveiled their first generation Virtual Reality head mounted device called HTC Vive.
NSFW
Short for Not Safe For Work. NSFW is web speak for any content that may not be appropriate in a typical workplace. This includes VR porn, scenes with a lot of gore or any highly controversial topic.
POV
Abbreviation for Point of View, POV is an essential component of Virtual Reality contents. More often visible to VR pornography, POV (also a porn sub-genre) happens when the person experiencing sexual ratification is recording the scene on his ‘Point of View’ to give the viewers the sense of what he is experiencing while doing the sexual act.
Oculus
Defined as an oval or circular opening (or ‘EYE’). It is a famous tag referring to the (Oculus Rift),a head mounted display created by Palmer Luckey and Brendan Iribe that is capable of making an immersive environment. This media google is specifically designed for Virtual Reality compatible contents like movies, games and live performances, and has custom optics that provides visual fidelity and wide field of view.
OSVR
Is the abbreviation for Open Source Virtual Reality (platform) – an ecosystem of hardware and software that aims to create standards for VR hardware and gaming. This open-source software is used to make programming in any variety of Virtual Reality technology possible and standard. OSVR is designed from the ground up to set an open-standard for VR input devices, games and output that generally aims to empower Virtual Reality media development and provide the best immersive experience on VR products.
SDK
Software Development Kit or simply “DevKit” is a set of software development tools that is used to make computer-related software such as software package/ framework, hardware platform, computer system, video game console, operating system, or similar development platform. It has sample codes, libraries, documents and tools to make the lives of programmers easier in developing applications and PC software.
UI
Short for User Interface, Anything that use input devices and software to provide an interaction between human and computers.
WASD
are Arrow keys alternative located at the left portion of keyboards, they are commonly used as an efficient navigational tools when playing games and other input activities. WASD key functions: the W key is used as an up arrow, A as the left arrow, S as the down arrow, and the D as the right arrow key.
Vive
A French word that means to ‘live longer’. In the Virtual Reality world, Vive is a headset created by HTC that is accompanied by two wireless controllers and two base stations with sensors that can provides players a 360° room-scale motion-tracking capability for superior Virtual Reality experience.
