Voyeurism is a vast genre in the world of virtual reality porn. It has been deemed the appropriate porn for those-who-like-to-watch and is the category of choice for a lot of people. A voyeur scene in VR porn is where the camera is outside of the action. The viewer does not view the scene through the eyes of someone participating in the sex like in a point of view (POV) VR scene. If done well, this can have some significant benefits that draw viewers to this category.
So what constitutes a well-done VR voyeur scene? What is it about some voyeur scenes that make our jaws drop, dick rise and pussy wetten? This three-part series will examine how some VR voyeur scenes are done much better than others. We’ll also look at a few examples along the way for clarification.
Disclaimer: All of what follows is from my own experience in watching porn, pulling it apart and analyzing its elements. The information will be presented as facts, but take it with a grain of salt. I do not consider myself an expert on the subject.
Why Do We Watch VR Voyeur Porn?
Perhaps the age-old answer to this question would be “because we like to watch.” I don’t think this answer tells the full story. I would assume the vast majority of us enjoy participating in sex with our partner or partners instead of just watching them with other people like voyeurs. The people who are ‘watchers’ form a minority in the population of VR porn viewers. People who prefer to engage in sex with their partners themselves (rather than watch someone else) still like to watch voyeur porn.
Perhaps it’s because of prior conditioning by the porn industry. The vast majority of non-VR porn is voyeur: you watch other people participate in sex without them acknowledging the camera. It’s very rare to see a non-VR POV scene unless you actively search for it. As the revolution of VR porn has come around in the last few years, although people wanted to experience scenes in VR, perhaps they still preferred being out of the action.
Or perhaps it’s because VR voyeur porn can do things that would be impossible in VR POV. The added scope of voyeurism in VR porn can allow for more exotic sex positions. Let’s say you wanted a shot with five girls, lying in a circle, each eating the pussy of the girl in front. Such a shot would be impossible in POV, but very much possible in voyeur porn. It’s also much easier in voyeur porn to showcase more performers as the camera is set back a bit, allowing for a greater scope of the action. POV instead has the benefit of feeling intimate with one or two performers at a time.
All of these reasons are valid for watching VR voyeur porn. The reason could also be that the thumbnail for the video looked interesting, so you clicked on it and it happened to be a voyeur scene. This reason doesn’t really explain why we would keep watching though.
Types of Voyeurism
Before we even begin to break down the elements of a VR voyeur scene, we have to set up some categories. If you happened to read my article on the scene ‘BFF Sleepover’ (a scene from VR Bangers), I introduced two distinct VR voyeur types. I’d like to expand a little upon that here.
The first main type of VR voyeurism I described was third-wheel voyeurism. This is where the performers will acknowledge the viewer’s existence, giving them a part in the scene. The ‘BFF Sleepover’ scene was an example of this. It was a lesbian scene with two girls going at it on a bed. There are cues where the girls talk and smile to you and present all their ‘assets’ to you. The girls don’t seemingly ignore the camera like in the other type. The viewer doesn’t participate in the sex though, so the viewer is a ‘third wheel’.
A sub-category of third-wheel voyeurism is the jerk-off instruction (JOI). This is where usually a single performer will talk directly to the viewer, telling them how to get off. This category has slightly different conventions to other third wheel voyeurism that will be discussed in detail in part three of this series.
The second main type of VR voyeurism is peeping-tom voyeurism. This is where the performers do not acknowledge the viewer’s existence. The viewer ultimately has no role in the premise or plot of the scene and is simply there to watch, like a peeping-Tom.
Relationships
Why do these two distinctions matter? This is where I’d like to bring up the idea of relationships. In a scene, you expect the performers to have a sort of ‘chemistry’. The performers should work well together in a way that keeps the momentum of the scene going. They should also have ideas of where to divert their attention whether it be on the other performer or the viewer. These relationships are the reason that a viewer will be aroused by voyeur porn. Any hiccups or bumps risk losing the viewer’s interest.
The type of voyeurism determines which relationships are the most important in a scene. In peeping-tom voyeurism, the sole relationship is between the performers. The performers should divert the sheer majority of their attention onto pleasing the other performers, using the remaining portion to keep all the sex presented to the camera (in a way that still seems fluid and natural). After all, all is naught if the viewer can’t see it.
In the JOI, the sole relationship is between the performer and the viewer. More on this in part three!
In other forms of third-wheel voyeurism, the relationships are both between the performers and between the performer and viewer. This can be quite complex and difficult to get right. The different weightings of the relationships will differ depending on the scene’s plot or situation. An analogy for the sake of simplicity (but a vast oversimplification) would be the idea of presentation. The performers should be the ones engaging the sex, but everything should be ‘presented’ to the viewer in a ‘like-what-you-see?’ fashion. Whether this is a person holding a girl’s titties in front of the camera or a performer looking at the camera from their blowjob.
When Do I Use Third-Wheel Voyeurism and When Do I Use Peeping-Tom?
One could argue that any situation in porn can be molded into any type of porn, in one way or another. But there are times where it is obviously more useful to use third-wheel voyeurism over peeping-tom or vice versa. As a general rule of thumb, if having an added viewer would add anything to the situation, go with third-wheel. That may seem obvious but it can be a difficult thing to ‘feel out’ and has been the pitfall of many otherwise-great VR voyeur scenes.
Committing to the Form
Whichever form of VR voyeurism is chosen, the performers must commit to this form for the duration of the scene. More often than I’d like, I watch VR voyeur scenes that appear to be peeping-tom in nature, with no obvious acknowledgment of the camera. But then halfway through the scene, one of the performers will look dead-straight at the camera. Peeping-tom voyeurism is one of the few genres in VR porn where the viewer watches to watch, not be watched. They want to watch the scene unfold like they’re a neighbor watching through a telescope, not like they’re being shown everything.
An example of this can be seen in BaDoinkVR’s ‘On-The-Job Penetrating’. The gist of the scene is that Alexa Tomas works as a cleaner in a kitchen. Her boss walks in and starts fucking her. Simple. The exposition or plot makes no indication that the viewer is part of the scene, yet Alexa keeps looking weirdly at the camera.
In a scene like this, the developing relationship is between Alexa and the male performer. This relationship carries the momentum of the scene and watching the chemistry between the two performers arouses the viewer. In peeping-tom voyeurism, it’s not that the viewer is living vicariously through the performer. It’s watching the connection, interplay, and fluidity of movements between the performers that makes the scene hot to watch. If the porn can trick the viewer that the performers are truly into each other, it has succeeded.
If the performers look at the camera, they break the illusion that they are truly into each other and the viewer may think “Oh, it’s just porn.” If the viewer thinks this, the scene has failed.
Next Time: We dive into the nitty-gritty details of VR voyeurism. What are the different elements that need to be considered in VR voyeurism? How do we refine these elements? How do these elements change depending on the type of voyeurism we’re going for? Check this out, and more, in part two!
