Welcome back to ‘What Makes A Great VR Voyeur Scene!’ In part one and two, I talked mainly about the third-wheel and peeping-tom voyeuristic forms. There is still one more prevalent form of VR voyeurism I’d like to discuss: the jerk-off instruction (JOI).
Although it may seem a lot different from the other forms of voyeurism, JOIs are still technically voyeur scenes, in that the viewer is watching the action, rather than experiencing it vicariously through a person involved in the action. It falls under the umbrella of third-wheel voyeurism because the performer does indeed acknowledge the existence of a viewer.
In this final installment of this three-part series, I’m going to discuss what makes a great JOI scene. There are, of course, many elements that come into play for a JOI scene but I would argue that the most three most important ones would be structure, dialogue and performance. These are the three that will be talked about. Before that though, I want to talk a bit about the relationship involved in a JOI and why this is important.
Disclaimer: All of what follows is from my own experience in watching porn, pulling it apart and analyzing its elements. The information will be presented as facts, but take it with a grain of salt. I do not consider myself an expert on the subject.
The JOI Relationship
The JOI form is a little different from the other two because it typically only has one performer in front of the camera. This means that the only relationship the performer has to worry about is that between the viewer and themselves. The aim of a JOI is for the performer to establish an intimate connection between themselves and the viewer, i.e. the relationship. This goal will ultimately drive the momentum of the scene from foreplay to orgasm.
The relationship involved in a JOI is the reason people will watch it. They want to feel like they are being watched and that they’re actually forming a connection with the performer. Rather than the focus being on watching sex happening on the screen, the focus instead becomes the performer watching and engaging with the person masturbating to them. In this way, dialogue becomes more important than showing nudity.
Developing this relationship can be difficult for some performers because they usually don’t have another performer to bounce ideas off of. The flow of the scene and everything that the viewer sees must come directly from them. Being able to talk to the camera and continue the pace until the viewer reaches orgasm is a skill that can be innate for some, but comes with practice for others.
Structure
In terms of structure, most JOIs will have a little introduction to give a bit of context. This could, for example, be your step-sister telling you how she’s seen you looking at her tits and maybe you should take your cock out. After the viewer is told to take their dick out (or pussy out in much rarer occasions), the performer will instruct the viewer on how they should masturbate, leaving no details out (stroking progressively gets faster, where the viewer should look, spit on their hands etc). Near the end, the JOI usually has a countdown after which, if the viewer played along, the viewer should cum by 1.
In my experience (and this may just be a personal preference), the best JOI scenes last about 10 to 15 minutes (so the viewer isn’t edging for ages). 20 minutes would be pushing it a little. There are variations on this structure. Some scenes are designed so the viewer cums multiple times. Some are deliberately sadistic with fake countdowns (where the performer counts to 2 and shouts “hands off!”). Some have an extended expository section. Obviously, these variations will make the scene last longer than the 10-15 minutes.
JOI: Dialogue
This can come naturally to a performer. Others may have to work on their craft a little. You can’t go over the top with dialogue in JOIs. Every detail about how the viewer should masturbate should be stated. This may get very monotonous and boring on its own. The most skilled performers will interweave their ‘instruction’ with comments on the context (“I’ve seen you looking at my tits”, “Don’t tell Mom!”) and on the performer’s own body (“Look at this pretty pink pussy”).
The tone of the dialogue is also important as it can provide some context to the viewer without explicitly mentioning it. An authoritative or imperative tone will give the impression that the performer is dominant over the viewer. A flirty tone can imply that there is no dominance and that the performer is getting aroused watching the viewer. The tone required will come down to what type of scene the director is going for.
For an example of what not to do, typed below are the first 30 seconds of dialogue from the scene ‘EnJOI Kylie’s Solo’ from BaDoinkVR.
Hi baby
Mmmm. I’m so horny today
Mmmm. What a beautiful cock you have
Mmmm. Are you getting hard?
Mmmm. I want you to jerk your big cock baby.
Perhaps you can see a pattern? The problem isn’t so much that Kylie uses an ‘mmm’ groan too liberally (although it’s a little annoying). It’s that what comes between the groans is very generic and doesn’t do much to add anything to the context of the scene. We don’t know who is dominant or what our relationship to Kylie is. The tone is also completely flat and disinterested. It doesn’t make a great first impression on the viewer.
Here is a different example from ‘Tori Black Friday’, also from BaDoinkVR but infinitely better.
Sometimes when you go to work baby I get so lonely.
I thought today we could play.
Mmm, I was thinking all these nasty thoughts in my mind.
Mmm, your lips on me. Your tongue on me.
Mmm, sometimes when I think about you my pussy starts to twitch.
This dialogue is so much more interesting to listen to than that generic porn talk from the last example. It hints at a context (you go to work, leaving Tori to her own devices) and also implies a lack of dominance in the scene (Tori and the viewer are both being pleasured equally). The tone through which Tori delivers the lines is also impressive, delivering them seductively and flirtatiously.
JOI: Performance
Not last and not least, the performer needs to put on a performance. Just so we have a joint understanding, the word performance relates to the movement of a performer in a scene including their stance, head movement, striptease, where they look etc. For the purposes here, a performance is considered separate from dialogue.
A performance acts as eye-candy for the JOI. The viewer will lose interest in the scene if they feel like the performer is half-assing it. Eye-contact with the camera is important to show that the performer is engaging with the viewer. Most importantly, the performance needs to fill the role of the character being portrayed. It’s no use mumbling words and looking down if the character is supposed to be a domineering dominatrix.
A striptease can be useful to some performances, particularly if the scene is designed to be flirtatious like a girlfriend scene or a step-sister scene. However, it is not a requirement. That’s right… a jerk-off instruction does not have to be porn per se.
In other roles and situations, it can help to be more conservative, particularly if the performer is portraying a dominant, sadistic or masochistic character. I’ve seen amazing JOI scenes with zero nudity on screen because the performance was that great.
Final Thoughts
I’ve talked about a lot of stuff in this three-part series. Some of the main points covered included
- Why do we watch VR voyeur porn?
- Differences between the third-wheel and peeping-tom forms of voyeurism
- The idea of a relationship and how it carries the momentum of a scene
- Some elements of VR voyeur porn, namely the camera and the choice of sex positions
- The elements of a JOI scene: structure, dialogue, and performance
I think voyeurism is a great genre of VR porn. If anything, it provides a welcome distraction from the normal POV genre that encompasses most of VR porn. With the VR porn medium becoming seemingly saturated with so much POV porn, the development of voyeuristic porn is a necessity for the diversity and variety of VR porn. A lot of POV scenes could have even been done better if the director perhaps thought of it in a voyeur setting.
That being said, virtual reality porn is a relatively new medium and it’s still developing. Directors are still trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t in this newly emerging genre. I’d like to see where VR voyeur porn ends up in a few years time. It sure is an exciting time for porn!

I wasn’t into voyeur scene for quite a while, some were terrible when they thought moving the camera was a good idea, they all appear to have stopped that now. I’ve found some great voyeur scenes here recently though.
