A lot has been said about the mind-blowing image quality and the incredible ambiance sounds you experience through a state of the art VR headset. It’s crystal clear, it’s believable, it’s immersive, and there is nothing that can top it at this stage of technological development. If you add touch controls and other accessories that help you feel what you see and hear, then you might not be able to tell if your perception is real or some kind of digital simulation (welcome to The Matrix!).
But while I agree with the arguments and have enjoyed my fair share of VR experiences in both porn and various apps (from introductory rollercoaster rides to the more advanced mountain climbs and skydives), there is one little detail that everyone reviewing the technology seems to forget or ignore: it’s about the intimacy and the way you interact with both the medium and the technology.
This article’s argument is very simple and can be summed up in one phrase: the hardware-software bundle provided by the VR technology helps us enjoy more personal and intimate moments that capture our whole attention and keep us from getting distracted by text messages, Facebook notifications, and the annoying advertising industry (and I really hope that this last feature will remain the same through time).
Do you remember renting or purchasing VHS or Betamax tapes with vintage porn? It was a thrilling experience and it required a lot of intimacy: you didn’t want to get caught by your parents, you didn’t want too many people to find out about your masturbation preferences and habits, and you would simply play the tape in your room while making sure you make the most out of your time. In the era of analog and physical media, the relationship we had with the technology was different, as we had one device to perform one simple task – unlike everything digital which came in with multiple competitive features.
Watching porn on VHS or on late television (usually Cinemax) was a much more personal situation: you were focused on this basic medium and sexual stimulus. Your attention wasn’t grabbed by anything else taking place on the television screen, and it’s very unlikely that you would simultaneously do something else. Therefore, the enjoyment was greater and you could just carelessly and passionately masturbate, according to your cravings and needs.
From this attention-grabbing point of view, porn became a lot worse during its transition to the internet. Yes, it spread at a rapid pace and it became more accessible to the masses, and the diversity became overwhelming. However, it all comes at a price: sometimes it consists of tiring and relentless advertisements for viagra or other subscription porn sites, but you’re mostly distracted by suggestions to view other films from the same category and banners involving different pornographic images.
If, back in the VHS days, you would have to watch the film from start to finish (or at least fast-forward the tape to the moment when the hardcore action began, and then let it play from that point on) and it was very enjoyable that way. That’s why I sometimes think that, in terms of grabbing your attention, VHS tapes are the grandfathers of VR.
On the Internet, on the other hand, you would watch short bits from multiple films and keep on seeking that high spot, the more exciting moment when the action was at its peak in terms of intensity. You no longer developed any kind of attachment to the medium, as it became dispensable and its abundance has made it less significant and memorable.
The Internet and its fragmentation of attention have killed any kind of emotional attachment to anything. Period. Luckily, though, we now have the virtual reality medium to bring back the long-lost connection to the medium (and in our particular case, porn).
If the Internet has ruined our attention span and ability to enjoy anything by bringing out the Andy Warhol-esque arguments regarding “15 minutes of fame” (which can be summed up by a lyric bit by the American band The Eagles – “and they’ll never forget you ’till somebody new comes along”), then the VR medium is here to help us take back our relaxation and quality time.
When was the last time you felt really relaxed and into something? It’s a really hard task to perform these days since we take our work, personal life, and hobbies with us via smartphones and other portable internet devices. Not even sex with your lover is as intimate and private as it used to since it can be interrupted and ruined at any point by a phone call from your overdemanding boss, a Facebook instant message from your overprotective mother, a Skype call from a co-worker, or an e-mail from the delivery company. Sure, distractions could happen at any point even before the age of the Internet, as somebody could just knock on your door and ruin your mood. But there’s a difference: whilst physical interventions are temporary and hit you with a tiny bit of reality, the internet messages will simply occupy your brain with some other issues.
Watching adult content on a website like PornHub, RedTube or XVideos can be just as disappointing: you enjoy your porn, and then suddenly get a pop-up message, see an ad that turns you off, and/or hear the sound of an e-mail or Facebook notification. It’s unpleasant, stressful, annoying and distracting, and the likeliness of this event is very high. Once your enjoyment is stopped for a few moments, it’s all over – just like that moment when a partner comes next to you and whispers something really nasty and off-putting in your ear, in a moment when you were actually expecting to have great sex.
In a nutshell, 2D or 3D internet porn without a VR headset is a disappointing experience which subjects you to the cruelty of the attention-dispersing online medium. And augmented reality (AR) will probably be the same!
We should really be grateful for what VR is giving us by virtue of its hardware. Once you put on your headset, the outside world is switched off and you can enjoy the film in its entirety, get immersed into the story, and even build some emotional attachment to the porn actresses you’re watching. After all, it’s a technology that encourages immersion: being there, getting involved, being transported into that exact time and space and becoming an indispensable part of the action.
Yes, virtual reality porn looks stunning – but so does the traditional 2D porn in ultra 4K quality. The most significant difference is that the VR hardware does you the biggest favor ever: it shuts off reality and lets you enjoy the content. There are studios that are involved in both porn mediums and they really try to deliver similar experiences (and this multi-platform trade-off usually comes at the price of having less innovative VR experiences), which creates the Kindle vs iPad argument. The former is expensive for what it does, but it saves you from e-mail notifications and performs one task by virtue of utter excellence. Conversely, the latter serves many purposes but isn’t the greatest device at doing any of them.
It’s the same with porn: it has really reached its peak with the development of the virtual reality technology, and the headset isolates you from the distracting and attention-grabbing reality (at least for the dozen of minutes you give yourself for your daily enjoyment). There are other mediums that display the same content with a slight quality loss (even if the image is the same, you can’t move your head or use accessories), but the main drawback is that they expose you to the advertisement industry and your own digital life. At this point, VR porn is ad-free, seamless, and increasingly exciting. As studios begin to learn how to extend the uses of the technology, they come up with new ways of delivering exciting content: whether it’s a different filming angle or a new position that they can capture with the heavy 180-degrees or 360 degrees camera.
But your porn-viewing experience is never boring and never attention-dispersing in VR porn – not as long as the film is great and really delivers a desirable situation. Every tree has its bad apples, but so far the medium is excellent: you can never really complain about a film for not grabbing your attention and not giving you something really beautiful to watch. Furthermore, it’s very likely that you will feel a degree of involvement and attachment to the product, which is unique!
Not even the VHS days provided such an intimate way to enjoy the action. You could still zone out, get bored, walk around the room and in the end find something else to do. But if you strap a helmet on, then you won’t be able to do anything else or focus your visual attention on something else. That’s why it’s so great and it is this involvement and engagement with the content that sets the standard really high. It brings back memories from greater times or makes unforgettable memories. It helps you fulfill every fantasy you’ve ever had and adds an extra layer of enjoyment just so you keep coming back for more. This is the true magic of virtual reality porn and the reason I’m supporting it so assertively. I’m really certain that we’re witnessing history in the making and this time I’d rather be on the side of the revolution than find the reason to support something obsolete and fading.
What about you, what makes VR porn so damn great in your experience?

VR porn is awesome to me because it gives the pleasure as a first person and gives you feel that you are the one actually fucking a girl instead of a pornstar.

moreover, the sense of privacy it gives is completely amazing…

engagement alone is great, and yeah, I think I won’t use flat porn again

agree but the only problem about vr porn is its size 🙁
