There has been lots of news about the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive lately. But Sony is still working hard on bringing its Playstation VR to market.
The latest iteration of the Playstation VR was available to try out at the 2016 CES. And Gizmag wrote about it here.
Let’s start with the bright side. The PSVR should be much cheaper than the Rift and Vive after taking in to account the large chunk of change its going to cost you for the PC. Also, with 36 million PS4 consoles, the PS4 has a good chance of having much larger consumer sales, at least in the near-term.
Now, let’s talk about the main downside. With the cheaper price, there is also less powerful technology. The latest versions of the Rift and Vive tend to impress more than the PSVR. But this is the same problem that always exists when comparing consoles and PC’s: PC’s can just bring much more power to the equation.
On the other hand, Playstation VR has the benefit of tight integration between hardware and software. This allows developers to get much higher performance than would otherwise be expected.
Oculus has been working hard to make their Rift as consumer friendly as possible. But, if the DK2 experience is anything to go by, you can expect many consumers to have significant problems getting their Rifts to work cleanly. So don’t underestimate this advantage of the Playstation VR.
