Most people are in it for the money but a few still work out of love. Lewd FRAGGY belongs to the second group. One glance at his large body of work and it’s immediately obvious this guy loves what he does. Lewd Fraggy is the creator of the adult VR game called Waifu Sex Simulator. According to Fraggy, “Waifu Simulator is a VR experience based on Unity, where you can load MMD (.pmx \.vmd) files in VR with Motion Controllers support.” In other words, it’s a VR porn game that allows you to create a virtual girlfriend.

The artistic process that Lewd Fraggy uses to create his content isn’t exactly the most groundbreaking. A lot of other people are using MMDs to make virtual sex scenes. What makes Lewd Fraggy different is that he does more of it. So much more of it in the fact that his name has become almost synonymous with the genre as a whole.

MMD stands for MikuMikuDance and it is a software program used to animate 3d CGI characters. Because the software is cheap and user-friendly, a growing number of anime enthusiasts are using it to generate their own content. Although it was originally designed to animate dance moves for a virtual pop star (Miku), it wasn’t long before the community discovered that MMD can be used for other, more erotic, applications.

Lewd Fraggy took this concept and ran with it. It’s now at the point where, today, he can claim a library of over 300 models and 1000 scenes, all completely customizable within his Waifu Simulator. Fraggy’s library is growing so rapidly that it’s difficult to keep track of but it’s safe to say that he now holds credit for one of the largest online collections of MMD ever compiled.

The Golden Age Of Waifuism

Unlike other MMD creators, Lewd Fraggy wasn’t satisfied with just creating videos for his fans to watch in VR. He wanted to give the user a hand in creating their own unique experience. His idea was for Waifu Sex Simulator to give the user a chance to construct a sex scene based on their ideal image of love.

In his own words, his mission was to show “how perfection can be reached through the crafting of the perfect Waifu,” with the ultimate goal of “bringing us the golden age of VR waifuism.” If these ideas sound a bit radical, it’s because they are. Fraggy suggests that the Waifu phenomenon is not just a passing trend but a fully-fledged alternative lifestyle, one that he hopes to help usher the world into.

It’s this passionate belief in the power of Waifus that has many anime fans looking up to Lewd Fraggy as the lost prophet of Hentai. For a long time, traditional hentai communities have been seeking fresh leadership to help them define a new vision for the VR integrated world. With the creation of Waifu Simulator, it seems that LewdFraggy has nominated himself for this position.

Not everyone is thrilled about Lewd Fraggy’s rise to prominence. In the short while since its release, Waifu Sex Simulator has already begun stirring up quite a bit of conflict, not least of which was the recent scandal involving Lewd Fraggy’s account ban on the popular social media site, Reddit. The reasons for the ban are still hotly disputed but it’s important to note that throughout the controversy, LewdFraggy has always remained committed to his project and refused to compromise on his vision.

Game Design

There is an almost libertarian aspect to Fraggy’s game design. Like the king who rules least, Waifu Sex Simulator lets the user decide what’s best. Once the game is loaded, there is a room and some menus, no hidden treasure chests or contrived cut-scenes. The user is left up to their own devices and the game’s reward is only equal to what they’re willing to put into it. This can sometimes lead to unnecessary frustration when navigating the game’s menu system or posing a specific body part. But it also means that, ultimately, there’s less in the way… less in the way of the user and their vision, and less in the way of the man and the anime. Lewd Fraggy knows that nothing should come in between a boy and his waifu and the game respects this fact even if it often means sacrificing usability.

Waifu Sex Simulator is not for everyone. There are definitely people out there who will find the app to be more of a chore than a game. The technical aspects of creating and animating a scene can be an incredibly tedious process and a lot of that is simply inherent to design itself.  This fact, combined with the niche quality of hentai in general, means that Waifu Sex Simulator will probably always remain a fringe title.

That being said, Waifu Simulator certainly proves that there is an audience out there for a design experience that walks the line between video game and 3D animation tool. Similar to the way TiltBrush was able to get people excited every day about creating a 3d painting, Waifu Simulator has the potential to get us excited about creating 3d hentai. Whether or not we have the attention span to actually make something worthwhile is yet to be seen.
