Wouldn’t it be amazing if at one point we could physically interact with the porn stars we watch on our headsets? Sometimes it’s really tempting to try! Who can blame you; virtual reality is a very immersive medium.
It’s a shame because 180-degree videos, even with all the sexy content and experiences they give us, can only do so much. The quest to make realistic virtual reality porn continues. To truly make virtual reality porn experiences realistic, we have to be able to have some semblance of control over the fucking. With motion controllers and a growing virtual reality install base, we have an industry with the tools to start tackling this problem. After all, sex is more than a spectator sport.
Making a Pornstar
There is a start-up that has been working on an interactive experience called CamasutraVR. Using a technique called photogrammetry, where 3D models can be made through images, they aim to use the porn stars 3D model in a gaming engine to make an experience like no other. Their quest is basically to perfect virtual reality porn.
Interacting with porn stars in VR has been a fantasy up until now and it is obviously no easy feat. Simply put, replicating reality in game engines is a resource heavy task requiring expensive computers. While most try to tackle this problem on game engines like Unity using generic, less resource intensive models, CamasutraVR goes into building this experience around porn stars head on.
But this process is expensive. Motion capture and photogrammetry have come a long way, but are still by no means accessible for mainstream use. It requires a lot of manual labor to clean up the CGI models, rig them up for animation, bring in people for the mo-cap sessions, and then implementing it all in the engine. Not just that, but they have to make sure the experience is also optimized for the average VR computer rig. Virtual reality is in its infancy, so there just isn’t enough people with VR rigs to justify such an expense. It seems like the odds are against them. But unlike Holodexxx, who fizzled out soon after starting up, Camasutra seems to be here to stay. According to their website and commentary made on social media, they are planning on releasing a beta in the upcoming months.
The Girls… For Now
Camasutra promises 10 adult experiences, one for each porn star featured. As of right now, we know that Casey Calvert, Krissy Lynn, Jynx Maze, Honey Gold, and Anikka Albrite are involved in some capacity. An exciting lineup. Most of these girls have done VR porn videos before so it will be interesting to compare the results. Here is to hoping that if the product is a success, they can make experiences for a female audience as well involving male porn stars.
The Interaction Factor – Conclusion
If they succeed in their goal, virtual reality porn will never be the same again. The interaction factor is a very important one. It’s the main reason the VR porn game Virt-A-Mate is so loved. It’s a rare and challenging, but very rewarding goal. The possibilities are truly endless when a porn stars 3D model is in a game engine. It can do anything – just for you – in VR. In porn, that is the holy grail. If the adult VR game has a similar interaction system to what Virt-A-Mate did, then that’s even better. And right now, most people who own a virtual reality headset are also consumers of VR porn. A product like this, properly done, can be a gateway to a new generation of virtual reality porn consumers. It also raises the standard of upcoming porn products and would likely allow for more funding for similar efforts. In some way, if CamasutraVR manages to deliver on their promises, the industry as a whole wins.

How is CamasutraVR doing compared to VRGirlz? And what happened to Holodexxx, are they gone, or just in the lab cooking something up?

Good questions. From what I know, the VRGirlz crew specialized in realistic scans and only started making the transition to motion based scans recently. They’ve been looking for funding since it’s a proprietary technology. It still seems like an actual product is a long way off. The CamasutraVR crew are using more typical technologies and are looking to release a beta soon, so it seems like they’re further down the product pipeline. Holodexxx, as far as their last Reddit post is concerned, ran out of money and lost a bunch of their developers. They were supposed to release an update after that, but they’ve gone completely silent ever since so it’s not a good sign.
