Of all today’s tech-related buzz terms, it is perhaps XR that has the most people confused. The initialism VR is known by a huge swath of the global population; AR to a significantly lesser degree; MR to a lesser degree still. Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality systems, devices, and software are understood by most self-proclaimed tech aficionados and are at least somewhat understood by mainstream audiences. Understanding XR, however, still seems elusive.
A Radical Cross Platform Reality

XR or X Reality (also known as Cross Reality and Extended Reality) describes the fluid integration of virtual or digital elements into real-world use. Classically used to represent a variable, “X” here points to the full range of potentials made possible by VR, AR, and MR tech. While it could be argued that even the rotary telephone was an XR technology, what we’re currently facing is less like such primitive technologies and actually much closer to the cyborgs of sci-fi past. After all, what is a “cybernetic organism” if not an organism outfitted with multiple XR tools?
Less wholly immersive than VR but more integrated into physical life than current AR and MR tech, XR appears to be the most visible horizon for current developments. Though some are seriously concerned about the almost inevitable blending of our minds with non-biological networks and systems, many find it a liberating, not restrictive concept. There are few industries where this may be more immediately obvious than porn.

Tying New Realities Together
OpenXR, a royalty-free standard for VR and AR platforms, was developed in 2017 by The Khronos Group allows greater cross-platform utilization of VR and AR tech.
