Internet pornography has given all of us the opportunity to explore our sexual fantasies in ways we never thought possible. Unfortunately, this also means that communications companies are now able to compile massive amounts of data about what turns us on. Just recently, this data has started to trickle into the hands of the general public and it’s beginning to paint a fascinating picture of our sexual preferences.

Why Single Out Women?

The data involving the sexual preferences of women is especially interesting because it offers one of the first scientific glimpses into the age-old question “what do women want?” Countless books and movies have been made on the subject but only now do we have actual numbers regarding women’s porn habits to finally shed some light on this ancient mystery.

Do Women Even Watch Porn?

Multiple studies now show that many more women are watching pornography than initially thought. Even conservative estimates suggest that as many as 1/3 of all women in the West watch pornography regularly and this number seems to be increasing. While this amount pales in comparison to the percentage of men who watch, it’s still a significant number and is certainly a large enough sample size to indicate what women tend to look for in porn.

What Are We Working With Here?

There are literally thousands of pornography websites on the internet but only a handful get the majority of traffic.  The data from any one of these major players would be more than enough to give us insights into what the public likes. For the purposes of this article, we are going to focus on the traffic from just one of these giant online pornography hubs so that we can narrow our scope and analyze the data a bit more closely. The actual site will remain nameless but all of the data is publicly available and comes from one of the top five largest porn sites in the world. We are going to use this data to analyze the porn search habits of women and in particular, we are going to focus on three different types of searches. These three types of searches will be favorite porn stars, favorite porn categories, and favorite search terms. By analyzing all three types of searches, we hope to gain a comprehensive picture of just what turns women on.

Lesbian Frenzy

One theme that remains consistent across all three types of searches is lesbian sex. By far the most popular search term for women is, in fact, the word “lesbian” and this preference extends to their favorite categories as well. Even when searching for their favorite porn stars, women search for female stars much more frequently than male stars and this all suggests that women are much more inclined to seek out homoerotic scenes than men.  Of course, this is already common knowledge and I think most people already suspected this in the first place. The interesting findings begin to surface when you move away from the number one category and take a broader look at the top ten.

Size Matters

When it comes to pornography, size does matter and women’s search histories prove it. The second most popular category among women after “lesbian” is “big dick” and their favorite search terms support this fact. Search phrases like “big black dick” make frequent appearances in the top 10 and are only surpassed by lesbian terminology such as scissoring and threesome. This all leads us to the next bit of analysis which involves how women’s tastes seem to be shifting.

Although many of what women search for has remained consistent for the past few years, there are a few trends that seem to be emerging. Chief among these is the trend towards bigger dicks and in particular, the dicks of darker complexions. If we look at the top categories for women between the years of 2014 and 2016, it’s immediately apparent that the category of “big dicks” is outpacing the others. In 2014, the category was dead last at spot number ten. By 2015, this category had shot up to number three. And by last year, it was sitting pretty at the number two spot just beneath “lesbian.”

This trend is also visible if you move away from categories and instead focus strictly on favorite search phrases. This type of search indicates an even more drastic shift with the phrase “big black dick” suddenly appearing at the number four spot in 2016. A phrase that wasn’t even in the top ten at all the previous year. Favorite porn stars also seem to follow this trend with black male star Mandingo rising two spots from 9 to 7.

Virtual Reality

With the advent of virtual reality porn, there is no doubt these tastes will continue to change and evolve. The enhanced realism and immersion of VR mean that certain genres will become less appealing while others will flourish. It wouldn’t be surprising if VR brings us entirely new genres of porn that have yet to even be discovered and it would be foolish to underestimate just how impactful these developments might be on the study of female desire.

The Big Picture

As with all statistical analysis, we should be careful to take this information with a grain of salt. It’s important to point out the possibility that the type of women who watch porn may have different tastes than the type of women who don’t and so this data may not be indicative of women’s preferences as a whole. Furthermore, all of this information only comes from one site and the organization and content of their site might have had a subtle impact on the numbers. Regardless of how credible you consider the source to be, the fact remains that more women are watching porn every day and it will be interesting to see how their tastes continue to change as the industry evolves. Maybe the world will never be able to fully understand what it is that women truly want but hopefully this fun little analysis is a nudge in the right direction.
